Story: Jay Dhingra (Imran Khan) is an aaj ka chokra. He turns up his nose at anything that remotely resembles soppy sentimentality, even though he works as an assistant to a film maker (Samir Soni) who peddles the most improbable mush on screen.

Enter, the new art director, Simran Sharma (Sonam Kapoor) who eats, sleeps and is drunk heady on ishq-vishq and all that goes with it. A diehard romantic, she even has a perfect boyfriend called Raj (Samir Dattani) who gifts her a white chrysanthemum, each time he meets her. But will the pristine white flowers score over Jay's crazy red roses, and crazier ways? Keep guessing....

Movie Review: First things first. Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor make an interesting pair. After the Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif coupling, this seems to be the most refreshing jodi that's jaunting and jiving on screen. Nice chemistry. Nice tu-tu-main-main (sparring). Nice physical compatibility. And a well-balanced emotional quotient. Kudos to the two of them to carry forth a film which once again doesn't really have anything to boast about in the `storys' department.

Thematically, I Hate Luv Storys, is extremely simplistic, uni-layered and terribly predictable. Imran and Sonam do begin on the we-hate-each-other note, with Imran squirming at any and everything that's filmy while Sonam swears by it all: pink teddys, bunches of blooms, candle-light dinners, Karan Johar films, cuddly Cupid's bows, shooting stars, soppy dialogues and all that made-for-each-other mush. But we all know the way the wind blows, from the word go. Mush shall rule, and how! For all the digs that producer Karan Johar allows on himself (filmmaker Samir Soni is actually a spoof on KJo), we know the film's going to end up reiterating KJo -- and all he translates into onscreen -- as king.

So, Jay Dhingra, who likes girls, but hates girly stuff, is gonna end up crying like a girl very soon. Of course, first he must ridicule Simran for all her `stoopid' misconceptions about lurrrv, including her boyfriend Raj who besides being a frumpish bore, wears `fugly' shirts too. But it doesn't take long for the tables to be turned, twice over. On the one hand, Simran discovers her penchant for Mr Wrong (quirky, irreverent Imran), rather than Mr Right (politically correct Samir). And on the other hand, sceptic Imran succumbs to the love bug, red roses, rain-drenched songs, airport encounters, et all. Only, their turn-overs are mistimed. So that, when Simran says `haan', jokey Jay says `nah!' and when Jay wanna say `yes, yes, yes!', it's a punctilious let's-be-just-friends from the sobered Simran.

Kya khali-peeli confusion, all this babalog blah. But hey, blah can be timepass too. Specially when it has loads of icing on it. Debutant director Punit Malhotra layers his first film with oodles of sugar coating: great locales, mast music (Vishal-Shekhar), a yummy 'n yuppy lead pair, some laugh-out-loud moments and a lot of laugh-on-ourself sequences that ridicule the romcoms that roll out of the Bollywood factory (there are jibes on almost all of Karan Johar films), only to finally reiterate them as pills the public wants. On the performance front, watch out for Imran's endless emoticons (eyebrow lifts, smirks, smileys) and his pronounced pout. And for Sonam's svelte form and pleasant screen presence.

Candy floss floats. Popcorn rules. Go, chew on it.

A word about:

Performances: Cool. Nothing to boast about, but quite watchable, both Sonam and Imran. Together, they share a lively chemistry that keeps the fun rolling. Samir Soni's spoof on Karan Johar-Sanjay Leela Bhansali is cute. Samir Dattani is suitably stiff. He's supposed to be a bore, no.

Story: Punit Malhotra's story is ekdum simple and predictable. But then, when was romance supposed to be rocket science!

Dialogues: Very ordinary. Sometimes corny.

Cinematography: Ayananka Bose creates a visually pretty film.

Music: Vishal-Shekhar create a peppy score that goes well with the pop tenor of the film. Watch out for the title track, Bin Tere and Bahara.

Styling: Manish Malhotra's costumes are the high point: uber cool and urban chic. Lot's of `fugly' shirts juxtaposed against fundoo Tees, with crazy graffiti.

Needless to say that the expectations are always on a high when names like Rahman , Ratnam and Gulzar come together . The teaser showed some real promise and it did the job of teasing and raising the expectations even higher . The first thing that strikes even before you listen to the music is the Album Cover . This is undoubtedly one of the most scary and horrifying album covers I’ve ever seen for an Indian film soundtrack . We have seen AB with the shades of negativity in his Yuva character but nobody has ever seen Ash like what has been portrayed on the album cover . To see Ash like this is indeed surprising .

Coming to the music , the soundtrack starts off with the track that teased us – “Beera” . The track has a whole lot of instruments and sounds in it . There are also some lyrics in some foreign language and with Gulzar sir on the board it is very much possible that it is no language at all :) . The 3 minute track does not have much of lyrics and is more like “Guru Bhai Guru Bhai ” from Guru’s background score . This song has more music in it and coupled with the visuals it would look nice on screen with Beera’s character . It would sound great in the movie and also on a good music system . It has some good use of percussion instruments of different types . I wont say that Rahman Sir has done a stupendous job but no doubt integrating so many sounds together is also quite a task and he has done that fabulously here . Its a good one no doubt but a little short than what i was expecting . I was also expecting a more of singing and lyrics in it . But that section is pretty limited and has been done well by Vijay Prakash , Mustafa Kutoane and Keerthi Sagathia . Gulzar sir get no special credit for this one . He would have managed this with not much effort .

There is a Chinese music influence in “Beera” which continues over in the next track “Behene De” . This one again has a whole lot of instruments in it and it keeps changing its nature throughout . Though mostly sombre it does get into a rock mood for certain bits . The lyrics on this one haven’t quite jelled(or gelled) along with the music . I don’t know how many of you would agree with me but this one felt like a typical Rahman track . For a 6 minute long track it does get a bit repetitive and if used at its length in the film would make it a bit slow . But maybe along with a proper situation in the film the song may turn out well . The composition didn’t really fascinate me and i wasn’t that impressed as such . The lyrics are good and even the vocals by Karthik are good .

The soundtrack gets back to the “paathshala” and “kala bandar” mood and comes “Thok de Killi” . I’ve heard this phrase mostly from Navjot Singh Siddhu’s mouth in his typical Siddhuism , never thought that Gulzar sir would actually churn out a song out of it :) . This one also keeps changing for its length and gets pacy towards the end suddenly . This track is definitely film oriented and won’t really make that much sense without it as such . The lyrics are nice and have a deeper meaning which is a little hard to comprehend . Sukhwinder sings in his typical style and does good .

Rahman and Rekha Bhardwaj did magic with “Genda Phool” but the magic doesn’t repeat itself again in “Raanjha Raanjha” . This one felt like a very basic track to me . Honestly speaking nothing really worked for me in this track . Rekha’s voice is special and she needs special tracks only . Still , she does a good job along with Javed Ali . Overall , its an average track for me with nothing much to offer .

Next comes “Khili Re” from Reena Bharadwaj (not Rekha) . Though the composition on this one has a bit of Jodhaa Akbar hangover in between but due to vocals it does sound fresh and is of the better tracks on the album . Its a nice slow soulful track and Reena sounds really sweet in it . Gulzar sir has also done a great job on this one and probably his best on the soundtrack . Overall its a nice simple track with Reena showing a lot of promise .

The last track on the album is “Kata Kata” which has a folk song sort of nature to it .There is nothing much to comment about this song . Its a mish mash of whole lot of instruments and different vocals . This one didn’t really impress me that much either but i am certainly looking forward to the situation where this song would be used in the film . Its kinda loud and in the theaters the loudness would increase even more .

Overall this album falls below expectations and it now depends on the way the music has been used in the film . I am hoping that the music does not hinder the film and adds to it in some way . As a standalone album it does not have that much to offer . Rahman sir has done a good job with mixing a whole bunch of instruments but the compositions are a lackluster affair . Its very strange but for the very first time Gulzar sir had very little to offer in this album . Beera and Khili Re are my pick from the album . Rest all are on the same level . After Blue , this one is again a weak album from ARR and the Rahmaniacs would certainly be a bit disappointed . I know its a very early view and someone can say that I’ve not let the music grow on me but the music from BLUE has still not grown on me and I don’t see that happening for this album too . I was really looking forward to this album and now i am thinking whats next . The Kites album also didn’t impress me that much apart from a few tracks . Lets hope so both the films make up for the music and turn out well .

'Raavan' is a film so terrifically inept, on so many levels of direction, performance and intent, that it demands and receives its audience's full, stunned attention. 'Raavan' runs for more than two hours, and too much is corny, cramped, and vague. Mani Ratnam's epic retelling of an ancient tale is amalgamated and cut to create a stylised but characterless piece with some spectacular imagery. The film is too celebratory of Bollywood's good guy-versus-bad guy, buddy-buddy ethos to rise above the limitations of the genre, and too obsessed with its own seriousness to be a truly 'serious' film. In short, what should be a moving story with big stars and sweeping landscapes by one of the world's greatest directors is a huge let-down.

Mr Ratnam had the chance of a lifetime - to film one of the greatest Indian stories, and blew it by tinkering with it so much that not only is it no longer the story many of us know and love, it's also a version that can't even be considered on par. Mr Ratnam, who can make romantic poetry out of a battle among three men in the confines of a bridge, seems defeated, or at least defused, by this increase in scale. Raavan's shortcomings have less to do with Ratnam's orchestration of his ambitious tale and more to do with the Frankenstein hatchet job enacted against it. The characters Beera (Jr B), Ragini (Aishwarya) and Dev (Vikram) function less as flesh-and-blood figures than obtuse archetypes. The three look and act as if they know they belong in an epic. The compelling emotion that marks the best Mani Ratnam movies is AWOL. The pacing is choppy, with most of the human moments lopped off. Is Beera Munda really the good guy? Or should we cheer the rebellious opposition with the sunglasses? And what the heck is a Munda? Is he related to Bisra Munda? Does he suffer from vocal cord paralysis? Was he inspired by Mukesh Rishi in 'Gunda'?

To say that Abhishek Bachchan hams it up is a gross understatement - he seems right out of a Kanti Shah film, a tinier version of Lambu Aata to be precise. Cringe-worthy. When she's not falling for the umpteenth time on a tree branch, or dancing awkwardly for Vikram, Aishwarya Rai either whines and yelps in a migraine-inducing tone, or stares vacantly, arching her eyebrows curiously. Her character, an outrageous collection of Hindi film heroine cliches would make even Sneha Ullal and Meghna Kothari blush. Vikram more or less sleepwalks as he has little to do, the man is overshadowed by the likes of Ravi Kissen. If it weren't all frustrating enough already, Vikram and Aishwarya indulge in an unintentionally funny seduction number that makes the ghastly Vikram and Shriya song "Meow Meow" in 'Kanthaswamy' seem like a beautiful masque. Mr Ratnam probably expected that Beera's battle with his demons would drive the movie, but unfortunately his own hackneyed script constantly gets in the way.

'Raavan' should really have been a tech demo. Manikandan and Santosh Sivan's cinematography is eye popping, the art direction and set pieces will blow you away. The film is drenched in atmosphere - you can't watch a frame of it without feeling that it has been generations since Bollywood tackled anything on this scale. It all goes to a waste as Mr Ratnam superficially glosses over what should have been the most interesting parts of the story to get to trite drama and stylized violence. A character-driven story like this should probably have spent more time on the characters and less time on computer wizardry. To top it all there's the flamboyantly overdone finalé on a suspension bridge, complete with surging musical crescendos and tears, it rings false given the earnest qualities exhibited in other Mani Ratnam films. Oscar winner AR Rahman's underwhelming score doesn't translate too well on the big screen, although Gulzar's lyrics stand out. Choreographer Ganesh Acharya makes a great cameo in 'Kata Kata'.

'Raavan' is a crushing disappointment. You will either be frustrated with its asymmetrical and manipulative storytelling or be captivated by the film's staggering nihility. As an alternative I recommend Mithun Charaborty's 'Teesra Kaun', a film packed with better written characters and a lead hero (Chunky Pande) who invokes raucous laughter as intended.

At the beginning of the film, a character incorporates the film’s title within a dialogue, like they did in older films. This dialogue leads to a song where we see Sunil Singh (apparently the producer’s husband) break into a dance reiterating the film’s title. It’s a sight you’re unprepared for, but is crucial in preparing you for what lies ahead. For very often, Sunil Singh, avuncular and portly, appears in scenes preaching about love and dancing in slow-mo with softly flying hair, amidst semi-clad women. In the last song, we see him flanked by Manisha Koirala, Rozza Catalano and ex-Miss India Nikita Anand - and you wonder about the big bucks spent on living out a fantasy. Well, why not you reason, if they have the bucks. But then again, why not do a home video instead of subjecting the janta to this. These are futile arguments, but swim through your head at a furious pace as you see the rest of the film unfold.

Ek Second... is a lift from the Gwenyth Paltrow-starrer Sliding Doors (1998) that was a rage when it released. As you may know, Sliding Doors follows the character’s life (played by Paltrow), exploring two possibilities in parallel tracks.

Set in Malaysia, Ek Second... starts with Rashi (Manisha Koirala) rushing to catch a subway; the film pauses and we see Rashi miss the train by a second. We then witness, in two parallel tracks, what would have happened to Rashi had she caught the train, and simultaneously, had she missed it.

Then on we have a bulging biceps and equally spherical-eyed actor (Muammar Rana) who plays a hot-shot novel writer and Rashi’s live-in boyfriend. With expressions consistently contradicting the context, this actor still appears a veteran when compared to Singh.

He has just written a book about destiny and how your fate is predetermined. He’s a strange fellow and in true retro style, pounds the piano when his novels get only average reviews. Then he opposes himself in an instant, and decides his next book will be about how you must challenge your destiny.

Jackie Shroff, looking stiff and puffed-up, always appears in time to save Rashi and keeps saying ` a fighter always wins’.

Meanwhile we track the corresponding lives of Rashi - in one she catches her boyfriend with his ex-girlfriend; in the other she catches on later. In one life, she’s super-successful, in the other she’s constantly struggling.

Manisha Koirala, caked in make-up, gives a spirited performance and your heart goes out to the actress who once worked in A-list projects. The film is directed by Partho Ghosh (Agnisakshi, Ghulam-E-Mustafa) and is shot in lush foreign locations.

As the film ends, we see Singh appearing in different get-ups, flanked by close-ups of the Ek Second logo stamped on the backsides of miniskirts. It’s a new low for the movie.

On the way out, the comments one heard were priceless. A gawky teen felt he, too, stood a chance of turning lead actor. Another person snapped, ‘comedy picture’. Of course, it wasn’t meant to be.

Rajneeti. What comes to mind when one thinks of this upcoming movie, which is directed by Prakash Jha? Well, in retrospect, one can profile Prakash Jha-movie music as situational, adhering closely to the theme of the movie itself. Movies like Khoya Khoya Chand, Apaharan, and Gangaajal can testify to this. This stereotype is shot into pieces, however, once Rajneeti's music album is played. The music that is expected to go along an imaginable political background, instead dives into an array of themes: romantic, patriotic, philosophical, and even a "dil pheink" party song! Yes, Rajneeti is truly a lyrical and musical treat that will surprise many with its rich variety of music. The variety is brought in by the four different music directors for this album: Aadesh Shrivastava, Pritam, Wayne Sharp, and Shantanu Moitra. The lyrics are written by Gulzar, Sameer, and Irshad Kamil.

The first track of this album is "Bheegi Si, Bhaagi Si". After the first listen itself, one can undoubtedly claim that this is indeed a Pritam song, and a very sweet one, at that. This song is a very light-hearted romantic number, filled with cute and amorous lyrics written by Irshad Kamil. This song is crooned by Mohit Chauhan and Antara Mitra. Yes, this is indeed the very same Antara Mitra who sang "Kuke kuke koyaliya kuke" from Life Partner. Though that song was able to display Antara's humorous style, "Bheegi Si, Bhaagi Si", allows her real voice to shine through, and we are sure that she will be in much demand after this. Give this song a go!

The next track would be "Mora Piya", composed and sung by Aadesh Shrivastava, along with spoken lyrics by Rosalie Nicholsan, with lyrics written by Sameer. Though generalizing is not healthy, it may be okay to say that this song is one of Aadesh Shrivastava's best compositions. It's a very unique song, because of its semi-classical setting. Upon hearing the song, one would wonder why this song is so melancholic, building up the anticipation for the movie itself. Listen this song for its freshness, as well as to give Aadesh Shrivastava his due accolades, since he had taken a short hiatus from composing, prior to this song.

"Ishq Barse" is the name of the third song. This song is possibly the shocker of the album - it's a full-on dance track, and a very catchy one at that. The song is composed by Shantanu Moitra, and is sung by Pronob Biswas, Swanand Kirkire, and Hamsika Iyer. Along with the lyrics of Sameer, the three singers weave together an interesting semi-classical number, wherein Pronob Biswas and Swanand Kirkire bring in the Rajasthani folk flavor while Hamsika holds the song together with her dance-floor friendly voice. This song is definitely among the best from this album, and is projected to do very well in the charts.

And now we come to the most talked-about song from Rajneeti - "Dhan Dhan Dharti". This song is a patriotic-to-the-core number, beautifully sung by Shankar Mahadevan, with lyrics written by Gulzar sir. What's interesting, though, is that this song is composed by Wayne Sharp. The song contains extremely moving lyrics, and will be appreciated by one and all for the lyrics and the integrity that they display.

Those are the last of the original tracks from this music album. Now, we have three remixes: "Mora Piya Mo Se Bolat Naahin [Dhol Mix]", which is sung by Kavita Seth, of "Iktara" fame, "Ishq Barse [The Bombay Bounce Club Mix]" and "Mora Piya [Twilight Mix]". All remixes are done by Deep with DJ Chantz, and DJ Lloyd with Discreet. All of the remixes will definitely contribute to clubs, but they do not necessarily enhance the songs. The second version of "Dhan Dhan Dharti (Call of the Soil)" is sung by Sonu Nigam. He, as does Shankar Mahadevan, sings beautifully, but once again, the lyrics of the song are what steal the spotlight.

Rajneeti is a mixed bag of treats. There is a little something for everyone, and its variety is the USP. Bollycurry's picks would be: "Mora Piya", "Ishq Barse", and "Bheegi Si, Bhaagi Si".

June 4, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): It is said that the epic saga of Mahabharata contains all the stories that exist in this world, be it lies, deceit, lust for power, revenge. In short all those that can make a solid impact. Prakash Jha taking a cue from this has set his big canvass film Rajneeti against an Indian political backdrop. But then at the same time he has merged dollops of The Godfatherwithin it. Nonetheless, the end product makes a compelling watch.

Cousins Veerendra Pratap Singh (Manoj Bajpayee) and Prithvi Pratap Singh (Arjun Rampal) are heirs of a powerful political party. But when Prithvi is appointed to take the lead, an angry Veerendra teams up with the backward class leader Sooraj (Ajay Devgan) to plot against Prithvi and evict him from the party. Prithvi’s younger brother Samar (Ranbir Kapoor) who is studying abroad and has no political aspirations gets sucked into the political rivalry between the families. Under the mentoring of senior party and family member Brij Gopal (Nana Patekar), Samar takes charge of the conniving affairs of state to start their own political party, gather funds and get Prithvi contest against Veerendra. What unfolds next as the battle shifts ground to the elections forms the rest of the film.

Like mentioned above, as the film mixes in elements from the Mahabharat, Veerendra’s character is a modern day Duryodhan where as Sooraj is Karan, a valiant soldier but on the wrong side. Brij Gopal played by Nana Patekar is like Krishna, the passive participant of the war who takes Ranbir Kapoor’s Arjun like character to victory with his guidance.

The film is a valiant effort by the master story teller, the multi-time National Award winner filmmaker, Prakash Jha who is at his home ground while making films of political drama genre. Here he is as ably aided by script writer Anjum Rajabali weaving just the right story and screenplay packing in all the treachery and deceit involved with Indian politics. What makes Rajneeti an engaging watch is also the fact that the makers have succeeded in narrating the story like a thriller format.

Jha doesn’t waste time in showing lip synced songs and incorporates them well in the narrative playing them in the background. Camerawork by Sachin Kumar Krishnan is simply superb. The way he has captured those vast mass shots deserves a bow. Although the running time of the film is close to three hours, it doesn’t matter much while watching the film and the credit for it goes to the editor Santosh Mandal. The sound design carries a good impact as well.

Absolutely brilliant performances by every single actor of the mammoth cast, also including those with smaller parts. As expected Naseeruddin Shah, Nana Patekar and Ajay Devgan are at their best. Arjun and Ranbir manage to match up to them as well and deliver a power packed punch. Katrina impresses with her uninhibited act. Sara Thompson as Ranbir’s foreigner girlfriend also leaves an impact in her relatively smaller part. But a performance that may win some awards for sure has been delivered by Manoj Bajpai. He is menacingly good. Shruti Seth, Vinay Apte, Kiran Karmarkar, Chetan Pandit and Nikhila Trikha lend able support.

Rajneeti is an important film in today’s times. It is not to be missed by connoisseurs of good cinemas well as those who forever complain that Hindi cinema offers nothing different.

Hrithik Roshan’s Kites may make his fans very happy by the way he has been presented (and he enacted) in the film but those looking out for a never seen been before experience that was promised through its mega marketing blitzkrieg will be in for a major disappointment.

J. (Hrithik Roshan) is a dance teacher in Las Vegas, who is also in the business of marrying illegal immigrants in order for them to get green cards. While being at his dance class, a rich casino heiress Gina (Kangana Ranaut) falls for her dance instructor. When J. comes to know of the background of Gina, the lust for green paper makes him play along the romance and marriage game with Gina. But when Gina brings him home to meet the family, J. meets Natasha (Barbara Mori) and discovers a piece of his past. The film travels back and forth time and locations – just as J. and Natasha find love in each other and elope to Mexico to start their live afresh while Tony and his gang is baying for their blood.

The biggest problem for Kites is its main lead characters played by Hrithik and Barbara lack sympathy what with both being gold diggers. While it may be trying to impress the Hollywood films audience, the basic plotline is extremely dated for a Hindi film. In fact at places you even feel you are watching Koyla in its remixed avatar. Yes it is visually stunning (brilliant camerawork by Ayananka Bose) and Hrithik seems to have given it his all. But the most important factor of the film, the script falters big time and the uneven pacing being the additional issue.

To give due credit, director Anurag Basu has given the film a gloomy operatic feel and the background score enhances this effect. Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori’s chemistry sizzles on screen despite their character’s language barrier. Their English-Spanish banter adds up to some funny moments. The countryside ambience of New Mexico, picturesque fountains of LA or the freeway chase in US, the virgin locations have been superbly captured. Rajesh Roshan’s music is very good, especially the song Zindagi Do Pal Ki. But mind you all the songs are played in the background and are not lip synced.

While Hrithik is outstanding in his role, Barbara is extremely good as well. There is an extremely endearing quality about her that you can’t help but end up falling in love with her as an actress. Nicholas Brown is menacingly good and is also a welcome change from the typical villain faces we see regularly. Kabir Bedi suits the part. Anand Tiwari playing Hrithik’s best buddy also is a refreshing addition. Kangana Ranaut does what she has been doing in all her past films. But just that she is just about a guest appearance.

Kites doesn’t justifying the hype surrounding it but if you still want to have a dekko, go in with zero expectations and some things including the unusual, unexpected ending may take you by surprise.

Movie Review Badmaash Company 2010

Insulting audiences with 'Housefull' and 'Badmash Company' on consecutive weekends threatens to split the lucrative, undiscriminating dumb-ass demographic.

Director Parmeet Sethi has said that he wrote 'Badmash Company' in just 6 days. He was obviously lying. The film gives the impression that Mr Sethi was just making it up as he was filming, with little or no regard for the audience's intelligence. Make no mistake, 'Badmash Company' is the umpteenth summer skinny dip in Yash Raj's putrid pond of retread action-thriller-musical twaddle. Its all shrill, convoluted and boring, and it sinks in a sea of interminable chases and con gobbledygook. Staying awake during this ordeal of incompetent, incomprehensible stupidity is not difficult - it's so noisy that you can hear it in the next town; staying interested is something else entirely. Thanks to this insipid product, audiences now have a new simile to hoot over - 'amateurishly uneven like a Parmeet Sethi film, and loudly stupid like a Yash Raj film'.

In 'Badmash Company' a bunch of dudes plan on going against the system and making quick money. If this theme were any more familiar you could buy it a bouquet and take it to a dinner date. Call me a victim of cultural brainwashing, but even the audience snickered at the idea of Anushka Sharma conning Manhattan police. The key to conning, as I understand it, is NOT sticking out like a sore thumb. There are the usual glossy foreign locales, montage of scenes with the foursome popping open bottles of champagne, indulging in all kinds of debauchery, parading about in expensive clothes. And in a shocking twist that you'd never see coming they turn against each other. After nearly two and a half hours, it all mercifully ends, leaving the viewer to ponder all the ways that dozens of crores of rupees might have been better spent. Maybe one would have liked 'Badmash Company' better ten years ago, when overproduced co(r)n films were simply stale instead of downright moldy.

Not enough can be said about the intermittently hamming and flat Wooden Leading Man Shahid Kapoor, with his frustratingly self-righteous demeanor, his pursed lips, and eyebrows that seem to have a life of their own. Parmeet Sethi unfortunately did not have access to the horse tranquilizers that Vishal Bharadwaj administered to Shahid while filming 'Kaminey'. Anushka Sharma puts the 'Bad' in 'Badmash' - her vacant-faced, anorexic, midriff-baring Bulbul exists to make sure you know Shahid Kapoor's Karan is heterosexual - useful in a leader of a pack of men on their own. Anushka and Shahid's pairing does sound promising in theory, but their lack of chemistry makes Dhruv Ganesh and Shraddha Kapoor in 'Teen Patti' look like old, familiar vaudeville partners. Meiyang Chang's Zing has no zing while Vir Das' Chandu is practically nonexistent.

Final verdict? 'Badmash Company' is predictably soulless Bollywood tripe, it is thoroughly and maddeningly obtuse. Shelling out Rs 500+ at your nearest multiplex for this sorry excuse of a film would render one of its songs into your life. It goes by the name of 'Fakira'.

Movie Review: Housefull (2010)

After a long painful drought (thanks to the exam season and IPL matches) of plain boring to irritating films arrives Sajid Khan’s Housefull. While in totality it does fall short of being the big great summer entertainer that it is been claiming to be, it however manages to bring many laughs for you. However, eventually it settles down in familiar territory.

Housefull narrates the tale of Aarush (Akshay), a perpetually unlucky bloke and a loser in life who moves into the house of his best buddy cum another loser, Bob (Ritesh) and his wife Hetal (Lara). But things continue to go wrong for Aarush. Convinced that true love can fade away his bad luck jinx, a desperate Aarush enters into many complicated situations while seeking it. Thus enter Sandy (Deepika) and Devika (Jiah) in his life. Things complicate further with the arrival of Sandy’s angry brother Major Krishna Rao (Arjun Rampal) and Hetal’s estranged dad Batuk Patel (Boman Irani). How Aarush and Bob in an attempt to hoodwink Krishna Rao and Batuk go on creating more confusion leading to a mirthful chaos forms the rest of the plot.
Much was expected from Sajid Khan who has been literally claiming from rooftops for weeks now that he has made the year’s biggest blockbuster. Though he has not entirely let us down, you do wish he could have opted for a more innovative plot. The second half ends up being more of an Anees Bazmee film what with characters trying to hide identities and going on a lying spree. Sajid Khan also seems to have taken the slap stick humour bit quiet seriously what with so many slaps happening within the film. A ‘slapathon’ sequence reminding of his Heyy Babyy takes place too.

Movie Review Ishqiya 2010
Welcome to Chaubey’s Ishqiya – where the narrative twists and turns like a naagin, leaving you to wonder where it’s actually heading to, and where the characters are real, raw, impulsive, unabashedly honest about themselves and as unpredictable as the tale itself. A film that glides over genres of a suspenseful noir-thriller and a crisp comedy will leave you with a nice after-taste of having something exotic, raw, and familiar yet unconventionally delicious!

Ishqiya works at many levels and layers. Of what I could identify, the top most is of a love triangle between Krishna (Vidya Balan) and two small crooks Khalujaan (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban (Arshad Varsi). The second of the dramatic pole shifts in the moods of the characters that mould the story as per their impulses and the third layer is of sarcasm, colorful language, blasphemy, raw sexuality and symbolism! All the three layers visible to the eye and audible to ear are in sync – perfect harmony!

What makes Ishqiya memorable fare are dialogues and performances. Performances that breathe life into the characters – be it the cunning and scheming Vidya Balan who emotes anger, vengeance, love, lust and intelligence all through her eyes, yet not losing the innocence and vulnerability. And then the emotional, yet charmingly sweet Naseeruddin Shah, a hard core romantic at heart and a witty flirt, who can at one end impress Krishna with his musical inclinations and the other spew venom with his witty taunts. Arshad Varsi as Babban is the stark opposite, lusty, raw who lacks Khalu’s wisdom but impresses with his objectivity. People, who outsmart him, impress him. Check the admiration in his eyes when he interacts with the panch-kam-bees Nandu who outsmarts him. His street-smartness helps him score over sweet Khalu to win Krishna over to his side.

Dialogues are outstanding! There is no other way I can express how the dialogues enhance the silent chemistry in the love triangle or leave the audience in splits with their timing and wit. The dialogues also contribute to the verbal irony of the situation – ‘Sab se gehri dushmani miyan biwi ki hoti hai’ as the wise Khalu comments referring to Krishna’s motives! The dialogues form the crux of the film effectively supported by the old tunes of SD Burman and Hemant Kumar adding to the rustic appeal of the old-fashioned love of Khalujaan and the latest Bollywood tunes adding to the sexual aggression and lusty youth of Babban.

Abhishek Chaubey is a smart disciple of guru Vishal Bhardwaj, for a debut director, he is amazing! Vishal Bhardwaj’s music impresses along with his wife Rekha Bhardwaj’s mellifluous voice. The only average thing about this classic is the editing which seems clumsy at times and the climax seems a little obscure with respect to the plot development. But we are willing to forgive that for the awesome entertainment value the film has.

Overall, it’s a must watch film. I give it 4/5!

Ram Gopal Verma, the director who has been responsible for giving some of the biggest hits and the debacles to the industry has been in the news for his cluster of flop films in the recent past. The director had the last chance (with Rann) to connect with his audience and strike the chord. And does he strike the right chord? The answer is YES. This time the director shows up with his favourite actor Amitabh Bachchan and the classic Jodi of the Actor-Director yet again works for the film. Like his previous projects Rann true is a stereotypical film and exposes the social drama.

An atypical film with no candyfloss and all serious drama, the movie would go well with the viewers who liked RGV’s previous projects like Sarkar and Sarkar Raj. A movie with loads of intelligence and strictly requires intelligent viewers.

The movie revolves around the ace journalist and reporter Vijay Harshvardhan Malik (Amitabh Bachchan) who is the originator of a private news channel named- India 24/7. This man knows no showmanship and is full of ethics, thus the channel is battling for its survival. Jay (Sudeep), Malik’s son, sees the channel as perfect money making venture and feels the things need to be improvised and bettered for the channels endurance. He hates his competitor (Monish Bhel) who is expert in selling the stories as entertainment. Thus his channel has higher TRP’s and is doing far better than Malik’s channel. However Purab Shastri (Riteish Deshmukh) plays a true journalist full of ethics like his guru and his idol Vijay Malik.

In the mid of all drama and the fight to make the channel do better than the rest, the story takes an unpredictable turn when the fraudulent and shady politician Mohan Pandey (Paresh Rawal) decides to use the channel for his advantage by using Malik’s son-in-law Navin (Rajat Kapoor), an industrialist. On one hand where Pandey aspiers to be the nation’s Prime Minister, on the other hand Navin asks Jay to join hands to make the channel a boom in the media industry and also knows that Pandey would help him become a top industrialist if he becomes the PM .

Thus Navin, Jay, Pandey and all other set a trap against Malik and try to blemish his image. And thus the lone man Vijay tries to come out of the situation and prove that media is not for entertainment but for a social cause and public awareness.

Ram Gopal Varma’s direction is top notch and brings good news for his film followers. Very smartly and characteristically he exposes the truth behind the media. Moreover his way of presenting such a serious social matter effortlessly and with simplicity is remarkable. He gives equal importance to all the characters in the film and undoubtedly amongst all Mr. Bachchan is the main highlight of the film.

The story by Rohit Banawlikar is realistic, aesthetic, up to the mark and deserves full marks. Cinematographer Amit Roy does a splendid job and is watch worthy. The dialogues are hard-hitting and play a crucial role to make the film a success.

Amitabh Bachchan is remarkable and words fall short for the actor. Paresh Rawal stylish avatar is amazing and his acting is totally unblemished. Rajat Kapoor and Monish Bhel do a great job and justify their roles completely. Sudeep is excellent and Riteish Deshmukh is astounding.

On the whole RANN is a well made flick and unquestionably worth watching. Go Run for RANN…

Movie Review: Veer; Star cast: Salman Khan, introducing Zarine Khan, Mithun Chakraborty and Jackie Shroff; Director: Anil Sharma; Rating: *** - Salman makes Veer work.

Anil Sharma is known for giving a huge canvas to his films and his latest film, Veer is no exception in that respect from many of his past films. Seeking inspiration from ‘Taras Bulba’, Veer is a big screen experience which may remind you of films like Kranti, Mard, Dharam Veer and even Gladiator and Troy at time but nonetheless it is an entertainer if you are willing to suspend your belief and not look out for much historical accuracies. Playing to the gallery most of the times, Veer seems to be aimed more at the masses than at the multiplex going junta.

Set in pre independence era, Veer narrates the tale of the valiant Pindhari tribe that fought against the British. It is circa 1862 when the Raja of Madhavgarh aligning with the British, treacherously kills 4,500 Pindhari soldiers despite them helping him defeating his enemies. Pindhari warrior Prithvi Singh (Mithun) vows to slaughter the Raja (Jackie) and every British soldier that comes his way. His son grows up to be a dare devil fighter, Veer (Salman). Prithvi sends his sons Veer and Punya (Sohail Khan) to London for an education so they can figure out how the British mind works. But matters become complicated when Veer falls in love with the princess of Madhavgarh, Yashodhara (Zarine Khan). Now while vowing to get back his father’s honour, he also has to balance his love for her. How Veer valiantly battles the wicked king and the British and even manages to kick-start the Indian independence movement forms the rest of the film.

Salman towers around the film with his amazing screen presence and his efforts taken on his character are visible. You just can’t think of anyone else but Salman playing this role. Debutante Zarine Khan is very pretty but still raw as far as acting is concerned. Mithun Chakraborty is in top form after a long time and his scenes with Salman are amongst the highlights of the film. Jackie does full justice to his evil character. Sohail Khan repeats the same act he has been since last four years. Neena Gupta fits the bill. Puru Rajkumar and Aryan Vaid impress in their small parts. Bharat Dabholkar, Ashok Samarth, Vinay Apte, Rajesh Vivek and Yuri playing the Pindhari soldiers have been perfectly cast but don’t get much scope justifying their acting talent. The British actors lend able support.

Veer has many things going for it and the most important one being the conviction and hard work that Salman and Anil Sharma have lent to it. The battle scenes are terrific and so is the cinematography. There are many applause worthy moments for the masses to enjoy, be it the extremely well shot daring train robbery sequence, the pre-interval sequences when Veer and Yashodhara come to know about each other’s background or the confrontation between Veer and a disgruntled Pindhari tribe warrior and Veer’s first meeting with the Raja. There are a few downers as well, the most important one being the slackening of the film’s pace just post interval and the use of the same song ‘Surili Ankhiyonwale’ repeatedly during many key moments of the film. Also while devising the screenplay from Salman Khan’s story, the writers could have also weaved in a more imaginative screenplay.

Veer, however will work big time in the single screens and small towns, especially in the North. It is a paisa vasool movie just for watching Salman Khan alone. Do check it out if you want to experience a guilt pleasure entertainer.

Pyaar Impossible is this typical tale of a beauty and a geek. A story that spans across seven years. Abhay Sharma (Uday Chopra), a computer geek, tells us about his HUGE crush that he has on Aalisha (Priyanka Chopra) the college hottie. Due to different reasons, it takes him seven whole years to finally tell her, that he loves her. That's basically the story, the end of which you all can guess. Yupp. Happy ending.
The villain in the film is Siddharth aka Varun (Dino Morea). He is a tech-thief and the thorn between Abhay and Aalisha. How Abhay eventually fights to get both the girl and his lost-credit back, pretty much is the basic premise of the story. Not bad if you ask me. Typical of most of our Bollywood films.
But the painful part about the film is how this simple story has been executed. Give two boys full of ideas (read Uday Chopra and Jugal Hansraj) loads of money and ask them to make a film. Pyaar impossible is what you get. The film, loaded with glamour, and the best of eye candy, fails to capture the audience's interest. You are waiting for the next scene not because you're curious as to what happens next but because the scene you're watching bores you. You want it to pass.
However, the second half of the film is decent enough. You end up feeling not so bad to have shelled out your money on this one. The pace of the film too increases.
The movie has an amateurish feel to it. Some scenes are unnecessarily mundane. Seriously. It makes one wonder whether it is necessary turn off the audience to prove that Abhay and his father (Anupam Kher) lead dull lives? Yawn. The movie has only slightly brushed at the element of comedy. Otherwise it isn't hard to put up a straight face all through the film.
However, there are scenes that pull an emotional chord. Especially the ones where Aalisha questions Abhay about his first love. And the part where she realizes it was Abhay all along who had loved her.
The music of the film is great! Salim - Suleiman once again do not disappoint you. Basically that and the bright color scheme of the film is what helps you keeps your eyes open throughout the film.
Priyanka Chopra did not have much scope for acting in this film. Her character is supposed to be a hottie and she smoothly pulls it off. The sexy guitar tattoo on her nape gives an added sex appeal. She looks stunning in every frame of the film. Even the one where she becomes a geek. Hats off to Manish Malhotra and the whole team that has styled her.
Uday Chopra passes off effortlessly as the geek. But you easily get an overdose of him. He has worked hard, which is quite obvious but he still hasn't achieved what it takes to be an entertainer all through the film. Maybe if Uday concentrated on one thing at a time it would work…The whole juggling act of story, screenplay, dialogue and acting hasn't been handled very well by him.
Dino Morea as the venomous Varun looks like one of the Mafioso. The guy is bad but he still gets to have his way with the girls.
Anupam Kher as Abhay's father is okay. Jugal Hansraj's cameo is weird.
Go for the film if you're a person who fits in any of the following categories:-
One, eye-candy Priyanka is reason good enough for you to watch a film.
Two, you'd rather take a tour of Singapore by watching a Bollywood movie shot there than actually going there.
Three, you're a geek who is hopelessly in love with a hottie.

Farhan (Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman), 10 years after they have finished their engineering from India’s most prestigious engineering college find a clue to finally find their lost friend from college. Rannchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad aka Rancho (Aamir) their ex-room mate in the college hostel had silently disappeared on the graduation day leaving behind no clue of where he had left for. Rancho was the life of the college and with his unique wit had back then even managed to rattle the strict head of the college, Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman) but at the same time managed to win the heart of his daughter Pia (Kareena). Before leaving, Rancho had brought a major change in almost every person’s life he had come closer to. Starting their journey from Delhi and going to Shimla, Manali and finally ending up in Ladakh, what surprise is in store for Farhan and Raju when they finally manage to meet Rancho forms the climax of the film.

After two back to back landmark films of Hindi cinema Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai, expectations from Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 idiots had been very high. Added to that, was the combination of producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Hirani and Aamir Khan coming together for the first time. So if you wondering whether the film manages to live up to the expectations then yes it does. Aal is well in here! Along with his co-scriptwriter Abhijat Joshi, Hirani packs in many subtle messages through his narrative and successfully drives home the point that when it comes to planning for one’s future, one must follow his heart and do what our hearts tell us rather than what our parents expect us to do. There are plenty of sequences that stay in your heart long after the film is over. Be it the unexpected suicide of a pressurized student, Aamir’s entry scene, the dinner situation at Sharman’s house, Sharman’s job interview, Madhavan convincing his parents to allow him to chose his choice of work and of course the laughathon caused by interchanging of words Chamatkar to Balaatkar by Aamir of an unsuspecting student. However, the child delivery sequence in the pre climax has been unnecessarily over stretched.

The film is a must watch for every Aamir fan. Just check the way he successfully carries out the role of a 22 year old despite being 44 years older. There is a scene when Boman drags him out of his cabin and the body language which Aamir displays then, deserves applause. Giving him adequate support are Madhavan and Sharman. Madhavan gets the double duty of giving the voice over for the film as well and he does it wonderfully well. Sharman delivers his career best performance and it would be a pity if he misses out on the Best Supporting Award for 2009. Debutante Omi playing the irritatingly snobbish nerdy Chatur Ramalingam is excellent and brings the house down on many occasions. Boman speaking with a lisp in the film doesn’t make his character turn into a caricature and yet again leaves a mark. Jassi girl Mona Singh playing Kareena’s sister is good and so is Javed Jaffrey in his brief part.

Shantanu Moitra’s music is already ruling the charts and each and every song has been picturised innovatively with Zoobie Doobie being the best visual delight.

Although 3 idiots is close to three hours long, these hours will definitely be worth spent as you shall come out with many a memorable moments and an amazing inspiration that the film gives.

Tum Mile (2009) Movie Review

Before we go to watch this film we already expect what it is about; the 2005 Mumbai floods. Then again the film has been promoted with emphasis laid on a certain lip-lock between the lead pair. So it probably has a love element too.

Four and half years ago disaster struck Mumbai as floods ravished the glorious city with loss of life in abundance. Many lives were changed then and this is a story of such. Most people lost loved ones but in Tum Mile’s case, it is about meeting someone because of the tragedy. This is the film’s main hindrance.

Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan’s characters fall in love and after some time fall out of love. Then six years later they meet during the floods and fall back in love. The rains bring them together. That is the only storyline in the film. Enough said!

Jannat was a pretty damn good film, so one expects director Kunal Deshmukh to do better with his next. He actually does worse. Special effects
are under-used and more than necessary screen time is given to the romance. One gets confused as to what type of film this is; a disaster flick or a lovey-dovey mushy romance. The confusion ponders over the mind throughout the total length. It is a director’s responsibility to ensure the final product is watchable; Deshmukh fails.

The only two good things to come out of Tum Mile are Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan. Both actors perform out of the box and show every one of their critics that they have what it takes to succeed in Bollywood. Emraan is quite possibly the industry’s most under-valued performer and one of these days will hit gold; mark my words. Soha shows in this film that she is every inch her own mother’s daughter when it comes to lighting up the big screen. Brother Saif may be winning all the accolades but little sister is fast galloping close.

Box Office predictions for Tum Mile are average. This is not a Bollywood Titanic, just your normal run-of-the-mill product from the Bhatts.

He won’t grease anybody’s palm to get a sales order for his company. He’s persuasive but doesn’t spiel to sell off goods. Worst of all, he’s honest and believes in doing things the right way. Harpreet Singh Bedi (Ranbir Kapoor) isn’t cut out to be a salesman. No wonder he gets the rap from his boss after he botches up a deal and is scoffed at by his colleagues who keep flying paper-rockets at him to remind him that he’s a loser.

After scraping through his college with minimal marks, Harpreet is determined to make his mark as a salesman. Working as a trainee in a company called AYS, which sells computers, he soon finds himself relegated to a corner, snubbed by his colleagues, insulted by his boss. Staring at the possibility of a ruined career, Harpreet stashes his honesty aside, and, while keeping his job as a trainee, secretly begins his own small company Rocket Sales Corp on the side, and ropes in co-workers from AYS and builds a customer base using the resources of AYS. Smart strategy, you would say. But then, Harpreet’s secret is exposed and time comes for him to pay the piper.

Coming from the director-writer-producer team of Shimit Amin-Jaideep Sahni-Aditya Chopra that gave us the cult movie Chak De India, Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year is an eminently watchable film that, however, falls a wee bit short of expectations. Granted that Shimit’s eye for details is as sharp as ever, and Jaideep’s writing (story, screenplay and dialogues) as steeped in reality as one could hope, but there’s something lacking. It’s hard to stomach the fact that people in AYS would risk their well-secured jobs for a rag-tag company run by a rookie who’s been branded a ZERO by his boss. Secondly, Jaideep Sahni ought to have given more depth and fire to Ranbir’s character. As a viewer you don’t feel the spark of the high-flying Sikh hitting pay dirt after convincing his clients with his mere honesty and willingness to take big risks.

The fuel of ‘Rocket Singh’ is its myriad characters that drive the story. There’s a porn-junkie computer engineer (enacted superbly) who sits cheek by jowl to Harpreet in the office and later helps him in Rocket Corp. There’s a feisty receptionist (Gauhar Khan) with a dream of rising to managerial position. There’s a street-smart team-leader who grills Harpreet but later joins him. There’s a sneering boss who’s interested only in sales figures and numbers rather than people. There’s a peon who’s tired of taking insults from his bosses. And, of course, aside from this melee is the newbie Shazahn Padamsee who gets only three scenes with Ranbir.

Ranbir Kapoor plays his part well but doesn’t modulate his voice much. Though his exterior, his body language (how he dances and adjusts his turban like a true-blue Sikh) is bang on, when he speaks, you almost hear a Sid or Prem talking. Prem Chopra, playing his father, is delightful in just a few scenes. But it’s the terrific performances by the supporting cast that makes ‘Rocket Singh’ what it is. It’s an almost perfect cast ensemble put together by Shimit, Jaideep and Aditya. The only three songs in the film (Salim-Sulaiman) play out in the background and cinematography by Vikash Nowlakha is a treat to the eyes.

Kudos to Shimit for the finesse with which he brings realism to a heart-warming story laced with wit and humour by Jaideep Sahni. But how one wishes the trajectory of this Rocket did not dip in the second half; and how the final message (that people are more important than numbers) did not feel shoved down our throats.

‘Rocket Singh’ is good, but it could have been much better.

DE DANA DAN MOVIE REVIEW
De Dana Dan almost marks a decade of the end of the sensitivity and sensibility of director Priyadarshan who switched on to commercially driven comedy capers post the success of Hera Pheri . De Dana Dan also almost marks a decade of the widespread acceptability that the slapstick genre has gained in scarcity of sane comedies.

Going by its casting, do not expect De Dana Dan to be a sequel, tribute or extension of the Hera Pheri series. Forget the threesome chemistry, there is hardly a single frame in the film where the trio of Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal share screen space. Except of course for the trademark Priyadarshan style chaotic climax where again their chemistry is diluted (literally through flooding fuss) as the entire cast joins them for more commotion.

Nitin Bankar (Akshay Kumar) is a driver under debt and Ram Mishra (Sunil Shetty) is a courier boy who hasn’t delivered much in life. Though both have already assigned girlfriends (Katrina, Sameera) for them, the film still takes too long to come to point. Money is the need of the hour and so Priyadarshan does some hera pheri in the story – which means a kidnap. Just this time the duo kidnaps a canine and you wonder if the film is going to the dogs.

As you try to keep a count on the ever-increasing character artists, the entire cast checks-in a five star hotel. Soon the story takes the shape of the 1992 Hollywood flick ‘ Blame it on the Bellboy ’ which was remade in Bollywood just a year ago as ‘ One Two Three ’ (and also starred Sunil Shetty and Sameera Reddy). A comedy of errors ensues with characters doing Bhagam Bhag throughout the hotel.

Call it a ‘wardrobe’ disaster but Akshay Kumar is locked in one for practically an hour of the film’s runtime. With a seemingly lost Sunil Shetty and a screeching loud Paresh Rawal, it’s left up to the character artists to save the ship. But a flood is induced in the climax as the director seeks inspiration from another Hollywood flick ‘ The Towering Inferno ’ (1974) with each character going down the drain.

As the name suggests, De Dana Dan is a quickie flick which is hastily written, rapidly filmed, has swift storytelling and speeding characters giving you no time to breathe, gasp, feel, absorb react or relate. The film takes time to kick-off and nothing much happens in the first half. The second half gains momentum with cross-connections of characters inside the hotel. The more you attempt to keep a track of the individual tracks, the more it confuses you. The less you try to join the links, the more it binds you.

What could have been the USP of the film, acts against it with the comic chemistry of Akshay-Paresh-Sunil clearly missing. In fact the other character artists add more value to the film varying from the deafening ones (Archana Puran Singh, Manoj Joshi) to the hilarious ones (Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Asrani). Undoubtedly the humour is loud and noisy but this slapstick is appended with some story (Suresh Krishanan). Unfortunately for a comedy, the dialogues are pretty lame with not sufficient punches or one-liners.

Pritam’s music is quite outdated this time and every song is forced into the narrative. Salim-Sulaiman’s background score is loud and at several instances overshadows the dialogues. With a major part of the film being shot inside the hotel, the camerawork isn’t much demanding and K Ahambaram does well as the cinematographer. The art direction (Sabu Cyril) and SFX (Red Chillies) effects for the deluge sequence in the climax are well executed though it doesn’t contribute much to the film. For a comedy, De Dana Dan is considerably long at almost 3 hour runtime and could have been more crisply edited.

Akshay Kumar repeats himself but is funny at times. Sunil Shetty seems jaded and uninterested. Paresh Rawal hams. Archana Puran Singh is in the Masti mould. Manoj Joshi goes over the top. Johnny Lever gets the best sequences and is clearly the scene-stealer. Rajpal Yadav and Asrani are equally hilarious. Katrina Kaif looks pretty. Sameera Reddy and Aditi Govitrikar can’t act. Neha Dhupia is better amongst the females. Chunky Pandey is non-existent. Vikram Gokhale looks miscast in comedy, which he has probably attempted for the first time.

Summary
Nitin Bankar (Akshay Kumar) is a personal butler, cook, driver, watchman, gardener to a wealthy female industrialist in Singapore.
Nitin has dreams of a better life, was wants to marry the love of his life, Anjali Kakkad (Katrina Kaif). With several factors
working against them, Nitin and Ram soon reach a dead end in their relationships, at which point both of their girlfriends
give them an ultimatum and this being the plan to strike it rich to kidnap someone important and demand a ransom.

Movie Review Love Ka Tadka 2009

A baseless film with no storyline is what Love Ka Tadka is. What else do you expect from a film that revolves around vegetarian and non-vegetarian food habits? So, it’s definitely not recommended but if you still want to know why, you may read the rest of the review.

The film starts with an item number which brings no joy to the audiences. Anyway, so once the film actually begins, it’s about a guy, Aditya, who works as a small-time executive and is flanked by his bearded best friend and his sick boss who likes chasing after much younger women. Then arrives the female lead, Sheetal, accompanied by her loud father.

Aditya gets married to Sheetal but that’s not enough. They need to impress her dad for which they need to buy a flat. And you know what’s strange? Daddy dearest is left roaming on Mumbai’s streets and then put into bearded friend, Vicky’s house, while they get a loan for the house. But acquiring a house wasn’t the end of all issues. The couple has now moved into a strictly vegetarian society and it means trouble for the couple that survives on non-veg. food. They somehow manage to get the people from the society to follow their non-vegetarian food habits and preach about tolerance towards all kinds of food.

So, all in all, a pointless script coupled with bad performances makes it very easy for audiences to give this movie a miss. Thus it is absolutely not recommended.

Movie Review Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009)
Rajkumar Santoshi has changed lanes. Known for intense, hard-hitting movies [with the sole exception of ANDAZ APNA APNA], Santoshi now attempts a rom-com in AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI, his new endeavour. That's something we all know by now, right?

But not many of us know that Santoshi is equally at home handling a comedy. And AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI proves it.
If you're attempting a rom-com, you need to get a few things right...
One, the romance should be livewire. Ditto for the chemistry between the on-screen pair.
Two, the film should make you laugh. As simple as that!
In AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI, the romantic moments are endearing. Most importantly, the on-screen chemistry is electrifying. Ranbir and Katrina look great together!

I've often said that comedy is serious business and the audience has moved over from banana peel humour in movies. The comedy in AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI - though it borders on absurdity - is funny in most parts. Sure, there're times when you feel that the humour looks forced [climax fight especially], but you don't grudge it since Santoshi's intentions are crystal clear from Scene 1 onwards: Entertainment ke liye kuch bhi karega.

Another factor that goes in its favour is Pritam's music, who belts out a couple of lilting tracks.

On the flip side, the film could've done with a fresh plotline. When you talk of 'Ghazab Kahani', it has to be ghazab by all means. It shouldn't fall prey to predictability, but the second hour succumbs to mediocrity occasionally.

Yet, despite the blemishes, AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI is a full-on entertainer. One thing is for sure, you'd fall in prem with Prem and his antics. An ideal date movie that should connect with the youth.

Prem's [Ranbir Kapoor] fundas in life were very simple - be happy, make others happy. A case of mistaken identity leads Prem to almost kidnap Jenny [Katrina Kaif], who was brought up by indifferent and uncaring foster parents.

Prem falls in love with Jenny, but realizes gradually that Jenny is in love with someone else [Upen Patel], the son of a conniving politician [Govind Namdeo]. Prem decides to sacrifice his love and get the lovers married.

In the first sequence, Santoshi makes it loud and clear that AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI is very unlike his previous ventures; this one harbours on illogical situations. Right from the time Ranbir sets his eyes on Katrina [the yellow outfit episode], the film is a roller coaster ride.

A few sequences entertain you thoroughly. Sample these: Katrina slaps Ranbir when he stammers as well. She feels he's imitating her; Ranbir's sequence in the church; Salman Khan's cameo; the love-hate relationship that Ranbir and his father [Darshan Jariwala] share; the sequence at the party; the interval point when Ranbir falls on the ground literally... the first hour of the film simply rocks!
But the second hour makes you a little grumpy. The third angle of the triangle [Upen Patel] isn't convincing, while his father's [Govind Namdeo] track is beaten to death. Even the villain [Zakir Hussain] is a sore point.

Watching the second hour makes you feel that the film may've had a longer running time and in order to bring down the length, a number of scenes must've been chopped off, which, in turn, must've resulted in continuity lapses. For instance, Katrina's kidnap by the villains looks too sudden. When and how did it occur?

Yet, there're two sequences in this hour which are remarkable and which should bring the house down. One, when Ranbir wears Katrina's top to hide her presence in the house and the climax fight, when Katrina mistakenly bangs Ranbir a couple of times.

Directorially, Santoshi proves the naysayers wrong and bounces back with a film that the youth would relate to. You can't write off the maker and AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI proves it. Pritam's music has 'Hit' written all over it. S. Thiru's cinematography is first-rate.

Ranbir Kapoor is the next big thing and AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI proves it yet again. He's charismatic, emotes exceptionally well and tickles your funny bone without making faces. It's a fantastic performance all the way. Katrina Kaif continues to surprise. She surprised you in NEW YORK. She surprises you again in this film. She scores in both emotional and light scenes. Also, Ranbir and Katrina make a wonderful on-screen couple.
Darshan Jariwala is exceptional. Smita Jaykar is very good. Upen Patel is decent. Govind Namdeo is getting typecast. Zakir Hussain is fair. Navneet Nishan is alright.

On the whole, AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI entertains majorly. At the box-office, the fantastic pre-release campaign coupled with the terrific chemistry between Ranbir and Katrina, excellent music by Pritam and tremendous appeal for youth should ensure a big start for the film at the ticket window. The business prospects seem excellent, thus ensuring handsome returns for its investors.

Jail is one of the most awaited movies of 2009 from the much-acclaimed director of Fashion, Madhur Bhandakar, who is always up to doing something unique. This movie showcases Neil Nitin Mukesh and Mugdha Godse in pivotal roles.

The album has only four songs, but they are a perfect blend of melodious and fast-paced numbers.

The album starts with ‘Bareli ke bazaar mein’, an item number rendered by Sonu Kakkar. This song is a blend of rustic and western music and fits the bill of the current gen, who love fast and racy numbers. The remixed version, which comes with English lyrics, is quite average.

The next one ‘Daata sun le’, rendered by the Queen of melodies Lata mangeshkar, is a devotional number. The voice of Lataji makes this song a unique one, which leaves the listeners quite emotional. The ‘modern-day’ version of this song has nothing other a few more beats.

Up next is the ‘Milke yun laga’, a love ballad which is rendered by Sharib. The high-energy number makes the audience feels very energetic.
The last one is the ‘Sainya ve’ by Toshi, which is also a fast number. The remix version is just average, but the rock version is a perfect party and dance floor song.

In short, the album is a welcome break for the music lovers, who prefer soft and melodious numbers.

Movie Review London Dreams 2009
In real life, if you feel your colleague is far more superior to you in intelligence, talent, charisma, efficiency, chances are you might feel the heat. Jealousy, generally, stems from there. In the process, the best of relations get strained. LONDON DREAMS, directed by Vipul Shah, talks of two musicians, thick pals actually, and how jealousy drives a wedge in their friendship.

Let's clear a few myths before discussing the positive and negative factors of this film. LONDON DREAMS is not BAIJU BAWRA. LONDON DREAMS is not ROCK ON!!, ABHIMAAN, YAARANA or SAAJAN either [a section of the industry wants us to believe that]. The truth is, LONDON DREAMS borrows from Milos Forman's brilliant film AMADEUS [1984], which was based on Salieri and Mozart's life. In fact, Suneel Darshan too had made a film based on AMADEUS called SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM [2007; Bobby Deol, Upen Patel].
LONDON DREAMS is a complete departure from Vipul Shah's earlier outings, AANKHEN, WAQT, NAMASTEY LONDON and SINGH IS KINNG [produced by Vipul, directed by Anees Bazmee]. This film is about relationships and tends to get very real and intense, in the post-interval portions specifically. The scale of LONDON DREAMS is gigantic and the execution of concerts [it's about a band] sweeps you off your feet.
In terms of execution, it wouldn't be erroneous to state that LONDON DREAMS is amongst Vipul Shah's most accomplished works to date. Also, it boasts of incredible performances by Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn. But there are hiccups too and it's these deficiencies that bog the film down!

They were childhood friends. But they had little in common except their family's connection with music. While Arjun's [Ajay Devgn] life was consumed by a passionate drive to get on stage and realize his grandfather's unfulfilled dream, Mannu [Salman Khan] was content with remaining a child at heart with no higher ambition than enjoying the good things in life.
As Arjun forges a band with Zoheb [Rannvijay Singh], Wasim [Aditya Roy Kapur] and Priya [Asin], a music enthusiast from a conservative South Indian family, far away in Punjab, music becomes a survival tool for Mannu, who takes to playing in wedding bands in his village.

Arjun gets Mannu to London and makes him a part of the band, but soon realizes he's created the biggest threat and obstacle to his own ambitions.

Mannu, with his inherent musical gift, becomes an instant darling of the crowds. Arjun's unbearable pangs of jealousy and insecurity only worsen when Mannu also unwittingly woos and wins his secret love, Priya. As he battles his inner demons, Arjun slowly devises a sinister plan to destroy his best friend.

It takes time to get into Ajay's world [its Ajay who's narrating the story here]. The film moves back and forth and it's only when the two buddies, now adults, meet that you realize where the story is headed. The first hour depicts the two extreme characters - Ajay, who's an introvert and who cannot think of anything but his goal and Salman, a happy-go-lucky guy, laidback and fun-loving, least focused.
The narrative has some interesting moments in the first hour, but the actual story unravels only towards the second half. The first half, frankly, only sets things up for the explosive drama that is to follow. The wheels start moving when Ajay plays a vicious game and hatches a conspiracy to ruin his buddy's career.

It's the second hour that does the trick. You can't help but carry several sequences in your heart, even after you've made an exit from the auditorium...

* Note the scene when Salman makes four different tunes from the original tune created by Ajay.

* Note the scene when Ajay meets an inebriated Salman and professes revenge, while Salman is completely clueless about Ajay's sinister plans.

* Note the scene when the band arrives in London after a 3-city concert and they're received by aggressive mediapersons.

But there're roadblocks too. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is a downer. LONDON DREAMS is about a rock band, about music, about concerts and the music had to be the soul of the film. Unfortunately, it's not! The songs have been filmed in the most energetic fashion, but how one wishes the music was one of the strengths of the film.

Also, the film could've concluded when the two friends re-unite at the station. Adding one more song thereafter only dilutes the impact of the emotionally correct sequence that has just been witnessed. Besides, the song in question hasn't been promoted either, so it only comes across as an aberration.

Prior to that, Ajay's outburst at the end of the concert is far from convincing. The film has a real feel, real characters and real situations, but the outburst looks unreal and is one of the drawbacks, from the writing point of view. It's just not convincing!

Besides, Ajay's childhood character is shown fleeing from the airport and making it big in a foreign land [London], without any support whatsoever. It's unpalatable!

Vipul Shah has handled this intricate subject well, but the writing could've been tighter. Sejal Shah's cinematography is super. Brownie points for capturing the concerts brilliantly. Salim-Sulaiman's background score matches international standards.
Asin is admirable and pairs off very well with Salman. She is sure to have a new name after this film - Chennai Express [that's how Salman addresses her affectionately, all through the film]. Om Puri has a brief role. Aditya Roy Kapur is very good and registers an impact. Rannvijay Singh doesn't get much to do, except throw nasty looks at Salman. Manoj Pahwa provides some funny moments. Brinda Parekh is okay.

On the whole, LONDON DREAMS has superb performances from its principal cast and several emotionally-charged sequences as its two trump cards. But its biggest drawback is its climax and also the music, which is the weakest link of the movie. At the box-office, the film should appeal more to the multiplex audience than the masses. Business at big centres, especially at metros, should be better, but mini-metros and towns will be a contrast.

Movie Review Aladin 2009
We all know the story of the classic Disney character, don’t we? Aladin, the magic lamp and those 3 wishes. In a conscious effort to make it different from the original animated film, Sujoy Ghosh the director of our very own version of Aladin, has changed the storyline. Here Aladin (Ritesh Deshmukh) hates his name, hates lamps and doesn’t make any wishes i.e until he falls in love, typical Bollywood style, with Jasmine (Jacqueline Fernandez). Genie is now Genius (Amitabh Bachchan) and we also have a vicious villian - The Ringmaster (Sanjay Dutt).

Produced on a huge scale with talented actors and a good director at the helm, we expect a fantasy thriller from Bollywood that not just tries to match Hollywood standards in Visuals but also in content. Does it? Read on
Aladin Review

Some positives

1. The visuals are good. Not the best we have seen from Bollywood, but one amongst the best.
2. Amitabh Bachchan is slightly over the top in the first half, but at this age, to have done everything that he has done in Aladin, requires a lot of energy and passion.
3. Ritesh Deshmukh - Whether its the role of the under-dog Aaloo, or while romancing the ravishing Jacqueline.. Ritesh in a lead role as Aladin is fantastic.
4. Jacqueline Fernandez looks stunning, throughout apart from the introductory scene. The girl from Sri Lanka has enough potential and screen presence to be the next big thing after Katrina Kaif.
5. Kids would enjoy some parts of the film.

Negatives

1. The director seems confused. Neither does the movie have enough to appeal to the kids, nor is it gripping enough for the adults. While a combination of romance, thrill and fantasy in an underdog tale - in short, masala - is too hard to resist for a Bollywood director, its the faulty execution of the already flawed script.. that makes it such a disappointing experience.
2. Too many songs - 3 in the first half alone. Do we still need 5 - 6 songs in each film? What a waste of time and money!
3. The second half including the climax is yet another perfect case of the writers taking the viewers for granted. Sequences like Sanjay Dutt in disguise revealing the secret behind the death of Aladin’s parents, followed by Ritesh confronting Bachchan to the climax when Bachchan looses his power only to eventually get it back.. isn’t convincing and frankly, quite stupid.
4. The movie gets too predictable too soon, and just when you gear up for the last action filled battle, the director disappoints you with a lame ending. Wish the money and runtime wasted on songs, would instead have been invested on more action.
5. Sanjay Dutt is wasted.

Overall, Aladin disappoints big time, if you must watch it for the VFX and good performances. We recommend you skip this and if Hollywood isn’t your cup of tea, watch Koi Mil Gaya and Mr India instead.

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif’s pairing in this film has grabbed everyone’s eyeballs and given it its needed publicity. The music which was launched recently has a fresh feel to it and each song has something new to offer, which is evident from the number of artistes roped in.

The album starts with Main Tera Dhadkan Teri, which is already become a chartbuster. KK, Sunidhi Chauhan and Hard Kaur make it one of the best hears in the album. The song has a remix, by DJ Suketu.

Hard Kaur is heard once again in Follow Me which is a good track by itself and sounds better than its reprises.

Tu Jaane Na, a romantic number, is one of the best tracks what with Atif Aslam doing the vocals and Pritam composing some fabulous music. The reprise has Soham, Rana Mazumdar and Ashish Pandit but Kailash Kher’s unplugged version beats it easily.

The next song, Oh By God, is fun to listen to with its wedding themed beats and vocals by Mika and Sunidhi Chauhan.

Tera Hone Laga Hoon, once again with Atif Aslam, this time with Alisha Chinoy, at the vocals, is the second romantic track in the album which carries a lot of promise and is once again one of the must-listens in the album. DJ Suketu’s remix is quite spunky too.

Prem Ki Naiyya is definitely not one of the most recommended songs in the album. While it can be fun to listen to at some times, it can be equally boring at others.

Aa Jao Meri Tamanna is one of those songs that you feel you’ve heard somewhere before. It is a track that carries a motive to do well, so, it may work with some and may not sound all that great to others. The remix of the song, however, gives it a club feel and makes it sound refreshing.

All in all, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani makes for a good buy. Pritam fans will definitely not be disappointed and even those who aren’t very fond of Pritam will still enjoy the album to a good bit. So, go ahead, listen to the album…we give it a big thumbs-up!

Bachke O Bachke (5:20) - Vocals by Sunidhi Chauhan, Shaan, Shankar Mahadevan
Heavy beats dominate this track. It's a fun song but Vishal Shekhar could have done much more with it. Anvita Dutt Guptan's lyrics are strictly average. Somehow Bachke O Bachke doesn't really work without the visuals.

Genie Rap (2:57) - Vocals by Amitabh Bachchan, Anushka Manchandani
Genie Rap is for our uber-cool Genie played by BigB. BigB raps with much gusto and it's brilliant fun to listen to him sing lines like,

'I got the rocks, I got the ride
I got the hotties by my side
I got the moves and I got the game
You can get close but it ain't the same..'

At 67, Amitabh Bachchan is still going strong! What energy!

Giri Giri (3:11) - Vocals by Sanjay Dutt
Giri Giri is for the Ringmaster, the 'witty' villain of Aladin. Sanjay Dutt's vocals are poor (no surprise there) but his amateurish singing works in favour of the track. Weird, I know.

Ore Saawariya (4:22) - Vocals by Amitabh Bachchan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sudesh Bhosle, Shaan
Ore Saawariya takes you back to BigB's songs in Baghban and Baabul - it seems to be highly inspired by Aadesh Srivastav's music. Lyrics and music arrangements are not too impressive. Overall, this one's an ordinary composition with good semi-classical vocals by Shreya Ghoshal.

Tak Dhina Dhin (4:32) - Vocals by Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan
Tak Dhina Dhin is like a lovely nursery rhyme. Kids will love this track, thanks to the lively vocals by Shankar Mahadevan and Shaan.

You May Be (5:43) - Vocals by Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjiani
Best song of the soundtrack. You May Be is beautifully composed and soulfully sung by Vishal and Shekhar. Love ballad of the year? Maybe.

FINAL VERDICT
Aladin's soundtrack is somewhat disappointing - the culprits: poor lyrics and arrangements and uninspiring tunes. I would say it's a wasted opportunity.

Movie Review Acid Factory 2009
'Acid Factory', or rather the filmmaker's attempt at making this film, is a bit dismal. Not many directors in the Hindi film industry give preference to content over magnanimous cast of the film. To rely on the story is a dangerous game in filmmaking but likes of Ram Gopal Verma have done it well. Even the biggest filmmaker, when relying exceedingly on stars carrying the movie, are bound to eat the dust some day. It's happened to Raj Kapoor and down to the last showman Subhash Ghai.

Suparn Verma belongs to the lot of star-awed filmmakers. His slick and edge of the seat thriller 'Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena' gave a new life to a top 5 star of today, Saif Ali Khan. Saif may not have found time to work with Suparn again. But the fact is that Suparn's debut film as a director opened a window for filmmakers to take some misfits and a good story and rake in money at box office.
Suparn tries the same formula again, this time with an ensemble cast of which most are on the sidelines of the glam world. A good story and some stars with ready-to-give-it-back feeling always make an energetic combination to crack the box office code. The director has belief in his story line and the actors have belief in their delivery. Suparn Verma manages to pass the litmus test once again as Director with his formula.Like his other work, as storywriter and screenplay writer, 'Acid Factory' relies heavily on western style filmmaking. People already liken Suparn's style to Hollywood filmmaking where formula and not creativity take precedence. The bottom line is to satisfy your viewers. Suparn and 'Acid Factory' do that for a particular audience!
'Acid Factory' does have a somewhat confusing storyline. An Indian commoner who does not read novels of Ayn Rand or Mario Puzo may find it difficult to keep track of sequences and chain of events. A group of people finding themselves in an 'Acid Factory' and not able to remember where they have come from, makes a good plot to start with. The character establishment work take a dragging trail but once it unfolds and people get going, the film again gathers momentum. As a Director, Suparn Verma does do well. 'Acid Factory' may not be as engrossing as his last 'Ek Khiladi EK Haseena' but theme of the film is far better than his last films as writer i.e. 'Ugly Aur Pagli', 'Karma', 'Janasheen' and other. In Sanjay Gupta, Suparn finds a producer with common likes and the two team up well to deliver a glossy thriller that will be liked by the urbane audience much.
Among actors, Danny comes back as a surprise factor after 'Chamku'. His presence lifts the screen to a new level; he is one of the few stars of bygone era with an aura that separates a common actor from a star in the viewers' mind. Manoj Bajpai and Irfaan Khan come second on the performance rankings. While Irfaan has now started to just repeat himself again and again (though still liked by viewers), Manoj Bajpai has learned lessons from his failures and is trying to keep the histrionics away.
Aftab Shivdasani and Fardeen Khan try hard to match their best abilities to those of the other fine actors in the movie. Neha Dhupia is taken over by Dia Mirza completely, among females, with the latter trying to prove a point that she is still around and not faded in the history. Suparn also gets good help from his technicians, especially his cinematographer and stunt director. The film's looks are rich and the film has all the ingredients to click with multiplex audience. This may help in getting business in metros but it may also harm its prospects in semi urban areas and small towns.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, who have delivered magnificent music for numerous movies, have once again come up with a wonderful job in the forthcoming musical, ‘London Dreams’, which stars Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan and Asin.

The album has 8 original songs along with 3 remixes.

The album starts with ‘Barso Yaaro’, a lovely rock-like song which is laden completely with heavy percussion and contemporary music. This song, which is a powerhouse, is definitely a crowd-gatherer. Vishal Dadlani and Roop Kumar Rathod have rendered their voice for this song, which starts with Vishal’s bang. Rathod, who enters after a while, softens the pace of the song, turning the song to ooze an Idnian appeal. A lovely song, rendered beautifully.

‘Man ko ati bhavey’, which has Shankar Mahadevan, behind the mike is a blend of Wsestern music and Indian vocals. Despite being a fast-paced one, it fails to leave any impression with the audiences. Even the remixed version of this song scores average.

Up next is ‘Tapkey masti’, for which the young Feroz Khan has crooned. The song as well as its remixed version score just average despite the presence of a good musical and Punjabi influence.

‘Khanabadosh’, sung by Mohan, is a high-energetic, foot-tapping song, over which people will go ‘fidaa’ after listening to quite often. The original track scores better than the remix version.

‘Khwab Jo’, rendered by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shankar Mahadevan, is a sweet, pleasing song, which carries the signature style of the trio of composers. This track exhibits the perfect blend of classical and soft rock.

‘Yaari bina’, sung by Roop Kumar Rathod, levaes a great impression on the audience, with the immediate and intense feeling of adrenaline rush. The Sufi influence has gone perfectly well with electronic elements.

Next is a Abhijit Ghoshal track, ‘Jashn jeet ka’, which is again a jittery, power-packed one. This song is a mix of electronic, rock and Arabic music.

The last, but not the least, is the track, ‘Shola shola’, which has been rendered by Zubeen Garg. This ‘dark’ song gives the audience a feeling of intrigue.

In short, the trio have tried to do something novel and different from their signature style, which has indeed become successful.

Movie Review What's Your Raashee
Damn! I forgot to check my day’s horoscope before catching up the first show of What's Your Raashee?. Now, as I nurse the bum ache of having sat through 3.30+ hours of this never-ending tale of bridal quest peppered with 13 long songs, I read my raashee clearly warning me of health hazards and possible monetary loss. Stars and planets can sometimes be spot on in predicting the daily human affairs.

Ashutosh Gowarikar - may stars bless him - exemplifies in ‘What’s Your Raashee’ how a brilliant story idea can be messed up when a filmmaker gets too involved in his own creation to think about the audience. So in this rom-com starring Priyanka Chopra in 12 roles, Ashutosh goes on and on and bombards the hapless viewers with song after song before finally wrapping up the film in a climax that leaves many jaws dropped (not out of snoring but disappointment) in the theatre.

But…but…but…my dear wakeful friends, somewhere between those unwanted songs and a few painfully stretched sequences, there lies a nice, entertaining film with delightfully wicked humour and fun. Only Ashutosh ought to have whittled away the overwrought rumps, he had a sure-shot hit on his hands. But perhaps, that was not in his raashee.

Based on Gujarati writer Madhu Rye’s book ‘Kimball Ravenswood’, ‘What’s Your Raashee?’ tells the story of a US-returned Yogesh Patel (Harman Baweja) who must find a suitable bride for himself within a fortnight, get married and inherit the wealth of his dear nanaji to save his family from the danger of an imminent financial bankruptcy brought on by his scandalous elder brother (Dilip Joshi).

A hesitant Yogesh hits upon an idea. Aided by his match-making uncle (Darshan Jariwala) he plans to meet a girl from a raashee each and then zero down on his bride. So, enter 12 Priyankas, each with a different zodiac trait.

While one girl (Aries) tries hard to please the NRI Yogesh, another (Aquarius) asks him to reject her because she’s already got a boyfriend. The third (Gemini) is a teenybopper who doesn’t want to get married soon. The fourth (Cancer) confesses to Yogesh that she’s not a virgin. The fifth (Libra) sees Yogesh as her ticket to the US. The sixth (Pisces) believes she and Yogesh are lovers of past lives reincarnated to unite in this life. The seventh (Leo) is a feisty dancer who thinks Yogesh is an NRI snob. The eighth (Scorpio) wants to use Yogesh to fulfill her dream of being a model. The ninth (Virgo) is a doctor who can’t leave her practice in India. The tenth (Sagittarius) is astrology obsessed. The eleventh (Taurus) is a rich heiress who pretends she’s mad. The twelfth (Capricorn) is a minor who doesn’t even want to get married.

So, as the drama trudges on, Yogesh must finalize one of these 12 girls to be his life partner. And the funny thing in ‘What’s Your Raashee’ is that he doesn’t even get to make that choice in the end.

The movie, though, can be seen for Priyanka’s terrific performances. She makes every one of her characters different - the slouch of a small-town girl, the bounciness of the teenybopper, the cockiness of a business executive, the swagger, the simper, the twitch of the lip, or the pursed brow of other characters. Priyanka rocks in ‘What’s Your Raashee.’ Harman Baweja pulls off his role pretty well after the disastrous performances in Love Story 2050 and Victory. In supporting roles, Darshan Jariwala and Mohan Agashe are first rate.

Apart from good performances, the movie does have well-penned, witty dialogues. In fact, the film is generously sprinkled with feelgood humour and is doubtlessly entertaining at times. If only Gowarikar knew how to rein in himself and cut down on the songs.

Just a statutory warning before I close. Cancel all appointments before you go to watch ‘What’s Your Raashee’. Sitting through this matrimonial marathon is like undertaking a long journey.

Bollywood rarely produces mythological movies. But movies like Hanuman and Bal Ganesh do encourage film-makers to present stories from mythology in an animation format. Bal Ganesh 2, directed by Pankaj Sharma, encompasses three different stories, all pertaining to Lord Ganesha, in one film and the outcome is gratifying.

For the viewer, Bal Ganesh 2 is not merely an interesting cinematic experience, but enlightening too. Also, when compared to the first part Bal Ganesh, Bal Ganesh 2 is a step ahead, in terms of content and animation.

Bal Ganesh 2 updates you with what you witnessed in its first part: The birth of Lord Ganesha and the confrontation with Lord Shiva; Lord Kubera's invitation to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha and Lord Ganesha's voracious appetite; Lord Ganesha taking the round of his universe, his parents...

Then three different stories unravel: The first story pertains to a cat and how Lord Ganesha plays a prank on it. Much later, Goddess Parvati gives an invaluable advice to Lord Ganesha. The second story pertains to Sage Vyasa. Lord Ganesha not only writes the entire book, but also translates it while writing it. The third story pertains to Lord Ganesha fighting it out with a powerful demon, Gajmukhasur.

Bal Ganesh 2 grows more and more interesting with every story. The best is reserved for the finale, when Lord Ganesha battles the demon and emerges victorious. As mentioned at the outset, the film is stronger in content and the animation quality is also superior this time. The voiceovers are perfect.

On the whole, Bal Ganesh 2 should appeal to kids from 6 to 80.

Music Review All The Best 2009
EXPECTATIONS

Masti. Masala. And some ‘dhamaal’. That’s exactly what one expects from the music of All The Best. Movies and music coming from the house of Rohit Shetty have a certain template feel to them. His films like Golmaal, Golmaal Returns and Sunday have been youthful entertainers with good music. This is what one looks forward to from All The Best as well which, as the title itself suggests, is a movie about celebration and letting your hair down. With composer Pritam and lyricist Kumaar at the helm of affairs, you know exactly what you are getting into.

MUSIC

Drum beats mark the beginning of ‘Dil Kare‘ that have the cry of All The Best creating the much required rhythm all throughout the song’s duration. A number that is set exactly in the manner of ‘Socha Hai’ [Rock On], whether lyrically, musically or thematically, ‘Dil Kare’ is a heavy duty rock track that is mounted on a really lavish scale. Suraj Jagan is a good choice for a number like this though one feels that K.K. at the helm of affairs would have further added zing to ‘Dil Kare’. Roopam Islam is there as a backup vocalist in the opening number of this album that gets into top gear from the very onset and also gives it a euphoric ending with a high voltage ‘remix version’. Expect the track to make it to the DJ’s list in a matter of few days from now.

Well, wait for K.K. is over with ‘Haan Main Jitni Martaba‘ which does have a very strong rock beginning to it, especially with the heavy bass doing the trick. However, the moment K.K. comes behind the mike, the scene changes for better. ‘… Martaba’ turns out to be a love song set in a rock genre that has a sound good enough to make you root for it after the first listening itself. With newcomer Yashita being the female vocalist bringing the perfect sound for a rock rendition, ‘… Martaba’ turns out to be one of the best songs to have come out this year. Also, it boasts of the kind of lyrics that Kumaar has excelled in over the last few years that he has been active. He makes best use of the platform made available to him and spins a romantic tale that is given a ‘rock solid’ (pun intended) contemporary treatment by Pritam. A winner which also makes an impression in the ‘remix version’.

One of the major reasons for the promos of All The Best to have made the kind of strong impression is the music that plays along with them. The beats of title song ‘All The Best‘ are the ones that catch your attention in the promos and on listening to it’s full length version, you know that the funda of Rohit Shetty, Pritam and Kumaar was clear i.e. to create an instant impression amongst the youth by bringing in a funky sound aided by some full-on orchestra. Rana, now turning out to be a regular with Pritam, Soham (who recently created his own What’s Your Raashee) and Antara come together for ‘All The Best’ that goes perfectly well with the celebration theme of the film and should again boast of some wide spread choreography and eye catchy picturisation.

Mood of the album shifts again with Clinton Cerejo getting a rock solo for him in the form of ‘Kyon‘. This time around the proceedings are really soft and slow with minimal musical instruments aiding Clinton’s rendition. Even though the song has a sad setting to it which is about changing times and drifting friends, ‘Kyon’ is yet another very good number after ‘…. Martaba’. Tailor-made for youth and boasting of the kind of sound that worked so very well for the music of Life In A…Metro, ‘Kyon’ is the kind of number that film maker of any biggie would be glad to place in his product.

Over the years, Neeraj Sridhar has been heard singing in a particular style and sound for many a Pritam hits. In case of ‘You Are My Love‘, he does bring in a definite change in both the departments. Also Pritam incorporates a certain child like innocence in the making of this song which is high on orchestra, is quite urban and contemporary and yet boasts of simplicity. An ensemble piece that also sees the coming together of Kunal Ganjawala, Rajesh, Alisha Chinoy and Megha, ‘You Are My Love’ is a celebration track about the coming together of friends in happy times.

OVERALL

One expected a decent time pass score for All The Best which would make an instant impression and ensure that audiences are entertained as they play on screen. For this purpose, Pritam does compose songs like ‘Dil Kare’, ‘All The Best’ and ‘You Are My Love’. However, there is a pleasant surprise in store with ‘… Martaba’ and ‘Kyon’ turning out to be two of the purest compositions by Pritam and Kumaar that bring in further quality to this album.

Settled in Goa, Veer (Fardeen) is a singer by profession and is making a daily living out of his older brother Dharam's (Dutt) sent pocket money. Veer has even lied to Dharam that he is now married and aiding him in all his lies is his buddy Prem (Ajay Devgan). Though in reality Veer is in love with Vidya (Mugdha) but her father hates him. Prem however is married to Jhanvi (Bipasha) who is looking after his ancestor's outdated gymnasium. Things go awry for Prem and Veer as they end up losing a lot of money and are neck deep in debt. Just then Dharam takes a detour to Goa en route his travel to Lusoto. With his sudden arrival, Veer and Prem don't get time to cover up their lies and Dharam mistakes Jhanvi to be Veer's wife and Vidya to be Prem's girlfriend. What chaotic situations it all leads to with multiple characters dropping in to make their problems more complicated forms the rest of the film.

All The Best is undoubtedly the most entertaining film amongst the 2009 Diwali releases. Rohit Shetty has yet again got it right when it comes to keeping his audience laughing without resorting below the belt humour and vulgar interludes. Witty one-liners and hilarious sequences involving Dutt and Johnny Lever have you laughing out loud. However, the first half isn't that gripping. But the second half covers up for it with confusions multiplying and each actor also contributing his comic best. The length however appears stretched as it runs around 2 hours 25 minutes. Some gags could have been shorter one feels. Pritam's music is perfect for the film.

Ajay Devgan showcases his improved comic timing and towers above the rest. Dutt too is in top form and entertains. Fardeen is passable. Bipasha and Mugdha don't have much to do but be a part of the chaos which they do ably. Johnny Lever finally after a long time gets a meaty funny part and he utilizes this opportunity to the maxim. Sanjay Mishra and Ashwini Kalsekar make the proceedings funnier.

It's a total paisa vasool entertainer and worth a Diwali outing. Go for it guys and forget your recession worries!

The album burst out with Chiggy Wiggy, a song with loads of oomph and vivacity. The song experiences seductive singing by Hollywood hottie Kylie Minogue and Sonu Nigam’s eclectic singing. The Bhangra Beats go perfectly with the song and one is assured to get addicted to the song at the first go.

Aaj Dil (Singers: Sukhwinder Singh, Shreya Ghoshal)

Rating: 7/10

Aaj Dil is a passionate and a love song. A true masterpiece by A.R. Rahman with some great musical arrangements, especially the piano that is set in the background. Exceptional lyrics by Mayur Puri and outstanding singing by Sukhwinder Singh and Shreya Ghoshal.

Fiqrana (Singers: Vijay Prakash, Shreya Ghoshal)

Rating: 8/10

The best of A.R. Rahman comes out with this track- Fiqrana. Remarkable composition by Rahman, great lyrics and sparkling singing by Vijay Prakash makes the song a winner. Beware the song is really infatuating.

Bhoola Tujhe- (Singer: Rashid Ali)

Rating: 5/10

In mid of classic soothing and catchy numbers, comes Bhoola Tujhe, a slow and sad song. The song is really situational and not for the masses. The song fails to make an impression.

Blue Theme (Singers: Blaaze, Neha Kakkar, Raqeeb Aalam, Sonu Kakkar, Jaspreet Singh, Dilshad)

Rating: 7/10

A song with a lot of attitude and spunk Blue Theme is a chic track. The song experiences lot of rap and metal embed with the track. Amazing lyrics, energetic singing and grand music makes the song rush adrenaline through your body. This one is a treat for Rahman fans and proves him to be the best composer in the country.

Rehnuma (Singers: Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal)

Rating: 6/10

Rehnuma is a temperate and squashy number. The song is special for its composition and refined singing by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal. The song requires a few hearing to get the true feel as well as mood of the song.

Yaar Mila Tha (Singers: Udit Narayan, Madhushree)

Rating: 6/10

Yaar Mila tha is a fun song. Well written by Abbas Tyrewala and potential singing by Udit Narayan along with Madhushree carries away the song. A completely different song from Rahman’s compilation which adds to the versatility of the album.

BLUE: A BIG dissappointment

Sagar (Dutt) and Aarav (Akshay) are good friends settled in the Bahamas. While Sam is a happy go lucky rich businessman, Sagar is down to earth and not as ambitious as him. Aarav on many occasions tries to instigate Sagar on coming out with the secret of “The Lady In Blue’ a ship carrying a huge gold treasure that was sunk in 1949 in the Bahamas seas. Aarav believes Sagar knows the route to the deep sunken ship and they both can benefit from the huge treasure that lies inside it. Sagar however doesn’t like to discuss about the ship nor has any interest for the treasure hunt. Just then Sagar’s younger brother Sam (Zayed) arrives from Bangkok after five years. Mafia boss Gulshan (Rahul) is hot on his trail for an assignment worth 50 million dollars gone wrong. With Gulshan too arriving in Bahamas and kidnapping his girlfriend Mona (Lara), Sagar has only 24 hours left for paying back the huge money which Sam has messed with. He is now left with no option but face his old demons and plunge into the deep sea with Aarav and Sam for the treasure hunt.

A really interesting premise shot beautifully but messed big time by unimaginative writing and lackluster direction is what Blue shall always be remembered as. The setting is different no doubt, but where are the requisite twists and turns and pace which are a must for this genre of films? The so called major twist that comes out in the end can be guessed quiet earlier in the first half itself. Also, almost the entire first half moves around with zero grip on the audience with more than enough time wasted on character establishment. The much hyped shark sequences are a big let down what with barring the opening sequence of few minutes (where believe it or not Akshay and Dutt literally ride a shark) there is not a single scene where the sharks are a threat and get you on the edge of your seat. The bike chase sequences have been shot very well though. The underwater sequences have been superbly lit up and one needs to salute the team of cameramen involved for it. The climax is extremely “thanda’ and derives unintentional laughter as well. Songs don’t really fit in well and the Kylie Minogue starring Chiggy Wiggy number doesn’t really work on screen. However, the background music and sound editing is excellent.

Akshay is in his element in here playing the flirty cool dude with a hidden agenda with amazing natural ease. Dutt approaches his part with zero enthusiasm and worse, his paunch is visible in many sequences. But Zayed is good and Rahul Dev impresses too. Lara Dutta is super hot and does ample skin show. Katrina Kaif in a special appearance doesn’t work at all.

Said to be over Rs. 100 crore in budget, Blue doesn’t justify the mega budget it has been allotted and first timer director Anthony D’Souza gets it all wrong mistaking style and extra coolness quotient for substance.

If you want to experience some good underwater photography on a big screen and a few well shot action sequences, then you can go for it but if you are expecting something more then let us warn you that you will be in for a BIG disappointment!

Music Review Main Aurr Mrs Khanna (2009-MP3-VBR-320Kbps)
EXPECTATIONS

When a movie stars Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor and belongs to the romantic genre, it is expected that it will boast of at least a couple of romantic numbers. Slight apprehensions do come from the fact that the director at the helm of affairs is a newcomer (Prem R Soni). However, considering the fact that the music has been composed by Sajid-Wajid (who have time and again given at least one chartbuster for each of the Salman films), Main Aur Mrs. Khanna does make you reasonably excited about the final prospects.

MUSIC

10 seconds into the song ‘Don’t Say Alvida’ and you know for sure that Sajid-Wajid have a hit in hand at least in the form of this title track. Belonging to old school of music which has a timeless quality to it and has more often than not always worked, ‘Don’t Say Alvida’ is a contemporary Bollywood love song while boasting of an out and out Indian melody. Coming close to the kind of music that one has heard in Salman’s films like Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, ‘Don’t Say Alvida‘ has Sonu Nigam at his best. The singer is heard in lesser number these days but when he croons a marvelous track like ‘Don’t Say Alvida’, you don’t mind the quantity. Shreya Ghoshal joins a little later in the day while Suzanne D’Mello is primarily a backup vocalist here. Still, they do make their presence felt in this Junaid Wasi written song that also appears in a well done ‘remix’ version and also a 90 seconds slow-n-sad version (a Shreya Ghoshal solo).

It’s time to get into a ‘Kajraare’ [Bunty Aur Babli] mode with Sunidhi Chauhan bringing on ‘Happening‘. Even though the title gives an impression of an English number in the offering, ‘Happening’ is mainly a catchy term that plays throughout this ‘qawalli’ which is written by Jalees Sherwani. Picturised on Preity Zinta (yes, she too has an important role to play in the film), ‘Happening’ is a foot tapping number that takes just a couple of listening to register with the listener. A good number which has been created for the masses and yet doesn’t turn vulgar at all, ‘Happening’ is fun, foot tapping and quite enjoyable for its duration. The number which also appears in a ‘remix version’, ‘Happening’ also has Wajid, Uvie, Farhad and Raja Mushtaq joining the show and deserves to be promoted aggressively.

From love, romance and dance, mood of the album becomes somber with ‘Rabba‘. With Rahat Fateh Ali Khan at the helm of affairs, you do expect the kind of outing that ‘Rabba’ would provide. A slow moving soulful track that does has a serene feel to it in spite of a sad theme, ‘Rabba’ is situational and yet effective. Jalees Sherwani spins a tale around the condition of the protagonist who has lost love in his life and is trying to explore things that went wrong. In the lines of ‘Tanhai’ [Dil Chahta Hai] and ‘Ye Dooriyan’ [Love Aaj Kal], ‘Rabba’ makes for a good hear.

The opening five seconds of ‘Tum Ne Socha‘ do remind of the sound of ‘Soniyo’ [Raaz - the Mystery Continues] . However all similarity ends quite soon and Sajid-Wajid create a tune that does make you appreciate it during the first listening itself. One is assured that Wajid is taking his job quite seriously as a singer, courtesy his rendition of ‘Tum Ne Socha’ where he is indeed good. A soft rock track where he changes pitch from being subtle to full throated, ‘Tum Ne Socha’ is a very pleasant sounding duet with Shreya Ghoshal joining Wajid behind the mike. A beautiful contemporary song that has Arun Bhairav penning the lyrics.

Finally, the album ends on a fun note with the ‘dhol beats’ of ‘Mrs. Khanna’ being straight out of ‘Pretty Woman’ [Kal Ho Na Ho] . A fun track that is picturised on Sohail Khan and Kareena Kapoor, ‘Mrs. Khanna’ has a good rhythm to it which is straight out of the David Dhawan school of music. Heavy on orchestra, something that goes perfectly well with the genre of the song, ‘Mrs. Khanna’ is entertaining and should be a riot on screen if picturised well. Written by Jalees Sherwani and Suzanne, the number has Shaan and Sunidhi Chauhan as the prime singers with Bappi Lahiri, Neuman Pinto and Suzanne D’Mello also chipping in.

OVERALL

Main Aur Mrs. Khanna is a satisfying affair and you don’t have any reasons to complain whatsoever. One expected at least a couple of chartbuster songs and Main Aur Mrs. Khanna remains consistent throughout with not a single number that doesn’t work. The best of the lot though is ‘Don’t Say Alvida’ followed by ‘Tum Ne Socha’ that are custom made for the romantic hearts. Meanwhile, ‘Happening’ should take further care of the album sales.

Main aur Mrs Khanna... aksar yeh baatein karte hai... ke agar Mr Khanna hote to aisa hota... Mr Khanna hote to vaisa hota
That precisely sums up the story of this film in short.

Samir Khanna (Salman Khan) has lost riches and respect in Melbourne city after being accountable for a big beating in the business world. Without a job, his ego is hurt when wife Raina (Kareena Kapoor) becomes the sole breadwinner of the family. He decides to shift to Singapore and strangely doesn't want to take along his beloved wife.

Samir asks Raina to migrate to India but she stays back in Melbourne and finds a job at the airport terminal. There she befriends Akash (Sohail Khan) and together they only end up talking about Mr Khanna.

Raina who has been working for months in Melbourne is suddenly questioned on her job permit. Does the film intend to say that women with their husbands away aren't allowed to work in Australia? Such inanity is only induced so that Raina and Akash are forced to pose as couple to save her job.

Predictably Akash falls for Raina and by the time he decides to propose, Mr Khanna is back. Expectedly a love triangle is set with Akash trying to win Raina by outshining Samir and the one-upmanship reminds of Salman-Akshay's Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. Of course you know who wins the girl and the loser is given a consolation prize through the decade-old done-to-death starlet special appearance in the last scene.

The film desperately struggles between being a comedy and a sensitive emotional drama but miserably fails on scoring in either genre. The character conflicts seem too insignificant which make you indifferent towards the resulting drama. The narrative lacks depth and ends up being a conventional love story. Prem R Soni tries too hard to add a shade of sensitivity in his direction but loses the grip as his writing is too fragile. The pacing is slow but thankfully the length is short.

Sudeep Chatterjee's cinematography fails to capture the beauty of Australia as the setting just doesn't move beyond the Melbourne airport. Sajid-Wajid's music is easy on the ears. Of the redeeming moments is the one when Sohail invites Kareena for an impromptu jig on the yesteryear soft number Bade Achche Lagte Hai.

Of the cast, Salman Khan looks dull and disinterested and his biting-words dialogue-delivery disappoints even more. Kareena Kapoor is regular and should clearly avoid doing drunken scenes where she overacts outrageously. Sohail Khan attempts hard to infuse life in this dead-drama with his buffoonery but fails to impress.

Preity Zinta's item number evidently modeled on the lines of Kajra Re is certainly not happening. She looks too old to play a seductress. Yash Tonk makes up for a cheaper version of Rajpal Yadav. And for god's sake, is Bappi Lahiri following Himesh Reshammiya to be a fulltime actor? Every time he speaks a frog croaks in the background score. Meanwhile what were Dino Morea, Nauheed Cyrusi and Mahek Chahel doing in the film?

Music Review Wake Up Sid 2009

What we get to see these days when people’s attention span is diminishing faster than the water table, the soundtrack of most movies is composed with the sole purpose of instant popularity. Seldom, we have a soundtrack where the music grows on you each time you play the songs, and is composed with the sole idea of letting the songs live through decades.

The coming together of SEL and Javed Akhtar, along with the supremely talented Amit Trivedi and Amitabh Bhattacharya in the music and lyrics department respectively, we get an eclectic mix of songs.

The album has a slow yet lounge start with the title track Wake Up Sid (Shankar Mahadevan). The song just blends in the surroundings, and gives you a feel that SEL have picked it up from where DCH ended and taken it to new heights. The song reaches its crescendo towards the end. A great flagship number!

After listening to Kya Karoon (Clinton Cerejo) I was actually sucked into the world so beautifully crafted by the words of lyricist Javed Akhtar. The music is easy and soothing. But what’s magical about this song is the vocals by Clinton Cerejo. Hear it to believe it.

Trust SEL & Javed Akhtar to come up with a composition like Aaj Kal Zindagi (Shankar Mahadevan), it has their trademark stamp all across this number. Ever thought about your ambition soaring high up…well now listen to how it is done..!

A number like Iktara (Kavita Seth & Amitabh Bhattacharya) does not happen everyday. It is surely the best of the album hands down. The song is rustic yet urban and has a touch of class. The music, lyrics and vocals seem so perfect when heard that it seems that it has that ‘Midas Touch’ to it. A perfect 10..!

The last song Life is Crazy (Uday Benegal & Shankar Mahadevan) talks about colors, friendship, happiness, and above all life being crazy in the midst of all this … you surely don’t want to miss listening to this track.

The album comes to a closure with Wake up Sid (Club Mix), which is well done but chances are you might prefer the original.

After a long time we have a soundtrack which is not staple Bollywood/Punjabi fare and is truly original and creative. The pick of the songs being ‘Iktara’ and ‘Kya Karoon’.

This album will appeal to the youth and will be heard for a long time to come. Kudos SEL and Javed Saab.

Movie Review : Wake Up Sid 2009
Sid is a grown-up kid, not a “man”, as he is often told by his good friend Aisha. Between the kid and the man lies the struggle to find one’s identity, a struggle to figure out what is it that one wants to do in life. When college days are over, it’s time to think beyond i-pods, parties, get-togethers and to chalk out a career. “But why?” Sid would scowl. He can, because he’s got a rich dad who even tries to lure him into his business with the promise of a latest Porsche as a gift. And the next thing you see is Sid sprawled on a chair in his dad’s office, munching on a pizza and yapping on his cell. A grown-up kid not willing to wake up to the altered reality around him.

Wake Up Sid is about a coming of age we all go through. It’s a film that instantly strikes a chord because it’s full of snapshots from our own lives.

When Sid (Ranbir Kapoor) flunks his college exam (not that I did) he finds himself in a tight spot. Tired of being taunted by his parents, he leaves his home and moves in with his best buddy Aisha, a Bengali who’s come to Mumbai to be “independent”. There, living with Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma), Sid is confronted by his harsh reality. He can’t cook for his life. He doesn’t have a job. His credit card expires. And on top of it all, he finds that he’s carried the disorder of his own life into Aisha’s. It’s time to wake up.

A simple story that touches your heart without overwhelming it with too much drama or emotions, ‘Wake Up Sid’ is the face of new-age Bollywood cinema that has already given us gems like Dil Chahta Hai and Rock On. Debutant director Ayan Mukherjee deserves a solid pat on his back for putting together a gripping and relatable film about a confused youth’s coming of age. The juvenile quirks and emotional dilemmas of the eponymous hero are depicted with subtlety that’s scarce in Bollywood.

Take, for instance, that scene when Sid is photographing a mother cuddling up her kid. In a flash Sid becomes aware of his own love for his mother. Or Sid’s outburst at Aisha at the fag end when she calls him a bachcha. After the outburst, a teary-eyed Aisha smiles at Sid. It’s the moment when she realizes that Sid is no more a kid.
Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma, two of the best talents in the new crop of actors, live their parts. In fact, one of the strong points of the film is its almost perfect cast. Ranbir is brilliant as the disorderly, confused, aimless youth, while Konkona comes up with an impeccable portrayal of a 27-year-old Bengali girl reading Tagore and listening to Hemant Kumar, a girl whose Mr. Right is a mature man and not a ‘bachcha’ like Sid.

Besides the tale of Sid’s self discovery, the movie is also about the sprouting and blossoming of romance between Sid and Aisha.

The film is technically top notch. The cinematography (Anil Mehta), music (Shankar Ehsaan Loy) and background score mesh together well to create an engaging story told without much flashiness by the director. The supporting performances by Anupam Kher and Supriya Pathak (Sid’s parents) and a cameo by Rahul Khanna (Aisha’s jazz crazy boss) are spot on.

Unspooling at a leisurely pace, ‘Wake Up Sid’ is a heart-warming film that leaves you in a wistful mood.

Music Review : 3 Nights 4 Days
While for the most part, he’s been overshadowed by his elder brother Anu, composer Daboo Malik has steadily been making his mark within the music industry for a long time now. With films like Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar and Kisaan under his belt, Daboo now returns with his latest release, titled 3 Nights 4 Days, which is releasing on 9 October 2009. And he does quite well for himself…

Directed by Devang Dholakia, 3 Nights 4 Days is a youthful flick starring Anuj Sawhney and Hrishita Bhatt along with a host of newcomers; and like the film, its soundtrack, with Daboo at its helm, is similarly geared towards the youth in the listeners.

Khawahishein, the opening number of the album, sees Sunidhi and Daboo himself on vocal duties. A bit too heavy on the techno sounds and beats, the song works nonetheless, as Sunidhi Chauhan works her magic. While Daboo is average as a vocalist, son Amal Malik’s fast-paced arrangement ensures that the song doesn’t slag when he’s on the mic. Not exactly the one that’ll turn into a club anthem, Khawahishein is still a good start.

Sheesha brings Neeraj Shreedhar to the mic with Sunidhi. A fast-paced track again, Malik gives this one a bit of a Middle-Eastern feel, in tune and vocals. While the Hin-glish lyrics are a bit jarring, the groove of the track is quite captivating.

Amal Malik sounds a bit too much like a karaoke singer on the under-produced Jaane Yeh Kaisi, which might just be the weakest link on the album. Something in the vein of the numerous Atif Aslam tracks doing the rounds of Bollywood, the song is hampered by Amal’s less-than-competent vocals and doesn’t garner a second listen from the audience.

Daboo does well to pick up the slack with Har Mausam, the only ballad on the album. Akriti Kakkar and Soham sound perfect on the vocals and the soft, toned down arrangement adds to the mood. Malik’s composition also accommodates lyricist Panchhi Jalonvi’s English interludes and makes sure that the track stays in a listener’s mind for a long time.

Shaan and Sunidhi come in strong on Dosti…Forever, the peppy follow-on to the previous ballad. The foot-tapping composition and the light arrangement use the two singers’ voices perfectly and make the track a very catchy listen.

Macha Shor, which could be called the title track of the album, brings back Amal Malik to the mic, along with Shweta. The Mediterranean sound and the fast-pace help the track and Amal sounds much better than his previous track. The Hin-glish lyrics, with its Spanish sounding interludes, penned by Amal himself, are catchy, and when the track ends, one could be surprised to find oneself asking for more.

The remaining tracks, Marianne’s Sorrow, Dosti Theme, Retro Party and 3 Nights 4 Days Theme are all instrumental or semi-instrumental shorts. Marianne’s Sorrow is a short instrumental track arranged to sound a bit foreboding, Retro Party isn’t much more than instrumental stock music drawn and arranged from the ‘80s. Dosti Theme and 3 Nights 4 Days Theme are simply short, reduxed versions of Dosti…Forever and Macha Shor respectively and could be considered fillers on the album.

Overall, while album has its weak points, especially some of the choices for vocalists and the lyrics, they are outnumbered by the strengths of the album. Daboo Malik’s compositions are all well-etched and arranged and while there isn’t a lot of variety to it, 3 Nights 4 Days is a commendable effort from the composer.

Music Review Acid Factory
Opening notes of 'Yeh Jism' pave the way for a dark outing to follow. Since Acid Factory has a dark and mysterious storyline to it, this Virag Mishra written song too follows the same route. On listening to it carefully, one gets closer to the film's plot. While first 100 seconds have singer Raaj going ahead with his rendition with minimal instruments in the background, it's the club mood which develops soon after that takes the song to a different level altogether. Composer Shamir Tandon does well in keeping the sanctity of the song intact while not straying away from the theme. Anchal Datta Bhatia, who had earlier impressed in Dus Kahaniyaan, makes a rather belated appearance in 'Yeh Jism' and adds on to the pop flavour of the song which also appears in a bona fide 'Club Mix' version. Expect this one to make it to the DJ's countdown.
A number which is set as a cabaret from the 50s/60s with modern day arrangements, 'Khatti Meethi' is the next to come. With high overtones of sensuality dripping throughout this song which is composed, sung as well as written (along with Amitabh Bhattacharya) by Manasi Scott, 'Khatti Meethi' is a number that takes time to grow. Though the basic rhythm belongs to the era gone by, its modern day treatment enhanced by the generous use of English lyrics which makes it fit into in contemporary times as well. One waits to see how it turns out after picturisation since its prospects will largely depend upon that.
Remember the chartbuster number 'Jab Andhera Hota Hai' from Rajesh Khanna starrer Raja Rani? The same number is reproduced by Gourov Das Gupta and is presented in a modern day avtar with some slight changes being incorporated, especially during the initial portions. Anchal Datta Bhatia, Saptak Bhattacharya and Shweta Vijay get together for this Shellee written track that moves fast and has been given a sonic touch. However, the final effect isn't as terrific as one would have expected, especially with modern day gadgetry and equipments available. In the quest of keeping the original feel intact with a shade of modern day feel to it, there is something that one does feel is amiss. Thankfully, there is a 'remix version' which does make a better impact.
The song that impresses most after 'Yeh Jism' is Vasundhara Das sung 'Kone Kone Mein'. Yet again, this is one track that sticks to the dark-n-intriguing theme of the film. Bappa Lahiri gets it just right to keep the pacing perfect for this Virag Mishra written number. Moreover, there is a distinct 80s pop feel to 'Kone Kone Mein' which is enabled due to some good mix of old and new sound that gives it further edge. The element of mystery is woven throughout the song's duration, courtesy Virag's lyrics and one looks forward to see how the song, which later also appears in an good 'Lounge Kilogram Mix' version, is incorporated in the film.

A techno heavy song comes next in the form of 'Raftaar' which appears to be made for the chase sequences in the film. It's the 'Yeh Jism' team of composer Shamir Tandon, lyricist Virag Mishra and singers Anchal Datta Bhatia and Raaj who are entrusted with the responsibility of making 'Raftaar'. Lyrically this song isn't as solid as its predecessor but from sheer pace perspective, it should add zing to the narrative.

The album ends with 'Nothing Else Will Do' which is composed and sung by Ranjit Barot. An English track which comes with a thump and goes well with the image of macho characters that one gets to see in Sanjay Gupta films, 'Nothing Else Will Do' should aid the narrative if played in the background with the six leading men in their dare devilry act.

OVERALL
Acid Factory is primarily made of theme tracks rather than conventional songs that one gets to hear in core Bollywood films. Don't expect a number to pop up which you would start humming on your way to office or in the college canteen. These are the kind of songs, especially 'Yeh Jism' and 'Kone Kone Mein', which start becoming much more meaningful when seen with the film's storyline

Dil Bole Hadippa Review

Dil Bole Hadippa is yet another film from the YRF’s kitty based in Punjab. This too represents the stereotypical culture of Punjab with swaying yellow fields, flashy celebrations, desi lassi and chomping sugarcane.

The film is the story of one such village of Punjab located at the Wagah border that has its own cricket team and plays match with the local Pakistani team for the Aman cup and have been losing in a row from past eight years. The team’s owner (Anupam Kher) turns to his son Rohan (Shahid Kapur) who plays county cricket in England to take over as coach and the captain to strengthen the team. A village girl Veera (Rani Mukherjee) though works with a local theatre group in village, treasures an unusual dream of playing a cricket in the big league with the star cricketers Tendulkar and Dhoni. She gets an entry in the men cricket team by disguising herself as a man. Here comes the twist in the story, Veera Kaur becomes Veer Pratap Singh sporting a turban and a beard. And thus it bears out the purpose of Veera living with a nautanki company called Jigri Yaar Dance Company, adept at costumes and disguises.

Her journey in the cricket arena leads to lot of humor, romance and on and off manifests the spirit of India for the sport. It ensembles all the superhit ingredients of the Yash Raj films like situations evoking patriotism, feel of DDLJ and loud Punjabi dialogues like main ek Punjabi baap ka Punjabi beta hoon. In the climax, when Veera’s speech about allowing girls to dream freely will certainly move the audience. Unarguably, Rani is looking better than what she has in years and Shahid too looked dashing. The only two spoilsports in the sporty film are Sherlyn Chopra and Rakhi Sawant.

By the way DBH is the Punjabi version of the 2006 high school rom-com ‘She’s The Man’ in which a girl disguises herself as her brother to get in a soccer team.

Movie Review Wanted 2009

Director: Prabhu Deva If you are crazy about regular commercial masala films leaving your brains at home, Wanted is the right canvas painted in south Indian colours where you can get a glimpse of Rajnikanth in our macho man Salman Khan. Woah hold down It’s a Prabhu Deva film, Bingo Wanted is undisputedly a well-written story with an excellent screenplay. But there is a flipside to it. It is a well-written story which lacks good direction and editing. Wanted opens up with an interesting plot with commissioner Ashraf Khan (Govind Namdeo) leaving no stones unturned to eradicate underworld terrorism from the country. Radhe (Salman Khan) is a hardcore gangster known for brutality and commitments. All he knows is the language of money. His loyalties lies with any gang provided the money is right. His entry in Gani Bhai (Prakash Raj) gang under the wing of Golden (Aseem Merchant), the right hand of Gani and betrayal to his existing gang headed by Data Pawle leads to bloodshed, as disputes crop up unexpectedly. However, story takes a twist with Golden’s death, which compels Gani Bhai to take matters in his hands and fly back to India. How Gani Bhai realizes the trap of commissioner Ashraf Khan, and the truth of Salman Khan, would have been an exciting watch had Prabhu Deva tightened his script. Cinematographers Nirav Shah and S Sriram are simply excellent. Special effects are over the top; could have been subtle. The music is awful, except ‘Dil Leke’ track, which is the only saving grace. No refreshing treat for ears, as far as stereotypical dialogues go. Wanted rides on Salman Khan despite his regular run-of-the-mill, yet nice performance. Ayesha Takia is good and looks gorgeous. Mahesh Manjrekar is perfect for his part as a womanizer. Prakash Raj as Gani Bhai has small, yet pivotal role and lives up to it beautifully. Vinod Khanna and Inder Kumar don’t have much scope, though they are instrumental to the pace of the story. Aseem Merchant is fairly good. Same goes for Govind Namdeo. On the whole, ‘Salman Khan’ factor will pull the audience to make this film survive. Infact, half the battle is won, courtesy loads of hype. My verdict: One time watch.

Movie Review Vaada raha... i promise 2009
Samir Karnik's first two movies (Kyun Ho Gaya Na and Nanhe Jaisalmer) were box office disasters, and then came Heroes which did decent business. The director is back with yet another movie 'Vaada Raha...I Promise'. Right from his second movie, to his current, Samir has always roped in Bobby Deol as his lead star. Vaada Raha, too, stars Bobby in the lead opposite Kangana Ranaut with Dwij Yadav and Sharat Saxena playing the supporting roles.

Inspired from a Russian fable, Vaada Raha is about a successful doctor Duke, whose life comes to an abrupt pause as he meets with an accident the night before he was to wed his love Nalini (Kangana Ranaut). After the accident, he remains nothing but a vegetable, paralyzed from his neck and below. Soon his love, friends and everyone around desert him completely. With nothing left to live for, a small boy Roshan starts to fill up Duke's thirst for life and helps him forget his grief. Will Duke gain back his confidence and hope on life? Can Roshan actually bring one such change in Duke? This forms the rest of the story.

Samir Karnik has immense potential but is let down by a faulty half-baked script. Vaada Raha is heart-rending but is mediocre. The wafer thin plot line is dragged endlessly, at most times unnecessarily with some weird twists into being an emotional melodrama. The movie goes off-track midway and the plot gets sluggish. The climax too is very disappointing.

Script is King and with a terribly faulty script it's extremely hard for the director of actor to save the film. Dialogues too are lame. Music adds no value, in fact ends up extending your boredom.

Samir Karnik has managed to extract good performances out of his actors. Bobby Deol does very well as Dr Duke. Dwij Yadav mouths dialogues that is way beyond his age but enacts it very well. He shares an amazing rapport with Bobby. Kangna Ranaut looks good, but her talent is wasted.

Overall, apart from the performances, Vaada Raha is below average from start to finish.

Movie Review Baabarr 2009
For those still not tired of films about gun-toting goons, tobacco-chewing gangsters, power-hungry politicians, humourless encounter specialists and, most importantly, corrupt cops, here’s another addition to the genre - Baabarr.
The film begins as the journey of a young boy into the crime-infested world of a small town in Uttar Pradesh but soon becomes a gore-fest as the dead bodies pile up faster than you can keep the count. Director Ashuu Trikha attempts to jolt a viewer repeatedly with the blood-curdling depiction of violence, but that’s not what necessarily makes a good crime thriller.
When a boy commits his first murder at the age of 12, you can very well imagine what he will grow up to be - an extortionist and a killer. Even before his teenage Baabarr’s life takes a definitive direction into the world of crime, where rival gangsters gun for each other, corrupt cops are hand in glove with criminals whom politicians use for their own mileage.
As the strapping young man Baabarr (newcomer Soham Shah (1)) spreads his reign of crime and terror, the state shakes up from slumber and ropes in a stern-faced, no-nonsense encounter specialist (Mithun Chakraborty) to capture the most wanted Baabarr, dead or alive.
Thereon, the movie becomes a cat-and-mouse game between Baabarr and the cops who are forever on his tail without being able to snare him. The director throws in a few twists and turns in the later reels of the second half to apparently keep the audience from leaving the hall before the end credits.
Soham Shah is raw and rusty at places but shows a few sparkles of acting here and there. In comparison Sushant Singh is eye-grabbing as his seething rival Tabrez. Mithun is good but Om Puri is the real scene stealer as the corrupt cop. Urvashi Sharma, the love interest of the titular protagonist, has a small role but she manages well.
Barring a few sequences (when Baabarr hunts down his rival Tabrez or when the encounter specialist closes in on his prey) the movie largely remains a collage of been-there-seen-that sequences cobbled together to give the impression of a gritty crime thriller, which evidently it isn’t. The script is riddled with dialogues that have by now become the stereotypes of any cops and gangsters movie.
Watch ‘Baabarr’ at your own risk.

Are you missing your teen days badly and wishing if you could just have a glimpse of it somehow? Rupali Guha listens to your wish and brings the subtle theme of teenager’s dream and hopes in her recent movie ‘Aamras’.

Every person cherishes his/her teen days as these are the times when he/she learns to take own decisions. There are innumerable wild wishes which sprout out this time. Everything seems pleasing and mind dances to the tune of every single music. Rupali captures these delicate moments in ‘Aamras’ and brings back the teen memories.

The concept is interesting and could have appealed all age groups since teen memories are cherished by every person. But somehow it fails to maintain the interest throughout, instead one finds the appeal in bits and spruts.

‘Aamras’ features the story of four teen girls who steps into a new world after their schooling. As is seen in most of the teen age movies, the plot which holds the four girls together is their unbreakable friendship. The girls, all aged between 17-18 years, belong to urban society and hail from different backgrounds.

The girls, Jiya, Pari, Rakhi and Sanya join one of the most prestigious schools in Mumbai. They grow in deep friendship with each other. They share all their secrets and support each other in all their endeavors. The movie has some commendable moments. The girl talks used in the movie is very interesting. The first part is fair enough but the second part could not retain the interest for the movie. It becomes more of filmy in its second hour and thus looses track of the main theme.

Everything seems to go well till Rupali brings in the romantic twist to the story. The romance looks artificial and seems as a deliberate effort from the director for box-office collection. Despite the effort, one is left to wonder if at all the romance was required in the plot of the movie.

Even the sudden death of aai [Jiya's mother] does not suit the plot properly and could have been avoided. These extravagances could have been avoided and the main theme should have been concentrated on.

The star cast, Vega [as Jiya], Ntasha [as Pari], Maanvi [as Rakhi] and Aanchal [Sanya] are appreciable in their performances. They enact the teenage whims and pranks in all its subtlety. Ajay Singh Choudhury [as Johny] is not fully explored. Other actors like Zarina Wahab, Reema, Sunil Sinha and Manoj Pahwa are fair enough in their acting.

On the whole, the movie is just a one-time watch which appeals only in parts. Besides, the lack of publicity has marred the popularity of the movie.

Churning out a suspense thriller is not everyone’s cup of tea. Director Deepak Tijori is a recent example. Fox goes down as the most carelessly made thriller. Everything is perfect till the interval and then the things take a non-gullible and predictable shaped just after one brings their popcorn packets to get ready for suspense to reveal.The story revolves around the protagonist Arjun (Arjun Rampal) who is well accomplished and acclaimed as a criminal lawyer. He has a habit to win the cases at any cost and criminals take his name with confidence when any case is assigned to him. After rescuing criminals from imprisonment, Arjun conscious grills him to choose the right path of honesty. However, someone is there who brings obstacles in his path. So, in his mission to get rid of his guilt, Urvashi (Sagarika Ghatge) and a police officer Yash (Sunny Deol) come to his rescue.
Nigam Bomzan’s cinematography gets full marks. Sunny Deol doesn’t give his best. Arjun Rampal fits in the bill perfectly and does a good job. Sagarika Ghatge springs up a surprise though her performance in Chak De India, too didn’t go unnoticed. Udita Goswami doesn’t have much scope. Vipul Gupta is promising. Ravi Gossain is strictly fine.
Overall, Fox loses at the end, and that results in the debacle of the film at the box-office.

Movie Review Aagey Se Right
Aagey Se Right is as directionless a screenplay can get and as wrong an interesting story idea can turn out to be. The title is as irrelevant and unconnected to the film as much as the film is to entertainment.

Dinkar Waghmare (Shreyas Talpade) is a coward cop whose service revolver gets stolen on duty. The revolver keeps revolving around the city, changing hands from a multitude of boisterous characters and in process gets accidental and undue fame to the faint-hearted Dinkar, in the same way Govinda got, more than a decade back in Gambler.

In a parallel track, Kay Kay Menon almost reprises his role of an ISI agent from Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam both in terms of its characterization and comedy and fails as miserably as he did in the original. He's come on a mission of mass-destruction to Mumbai but its love at first sight with bar dancer Pearl (Shenaz Treasurywala). A South Indian don (Vijay Maurya) tutors him on tapoori pickup lines to impress the girl and she actually gets awed.

The clichéd climax is set on a stage show under threat of a secret terror attack, where one hero gets to diffuse bombs by snipping off red-green wires, another guns down the villain and the heroine gets scope for another dance number. Alas there's no scope for entertainment!

The shoddy screenplay of the film wanders as aimlessly as the gun keeps hanging around, giving no sensible flow to the narrative. Besides one doesn't quite comprehend the mood of particular scenes on whether it's intended as spoof or serious. Like a couple of lousy dream-sequence songs that are seemingly satirical but actually sad. Vijay Maurya overexerts the South Indian accent making most gags inaudible and incomprehensible. The humour resulting from the language barrier between Maurya and Menon becomes boring after the initial one-liners and the sher-o-shayari is stretched to intolerable limits.

The pacing is too fast because of which the film loses finer nuances in humour. Like the scene where you are introduced to the don's underground den has some interesting wisecracks which you could lose out on if you aren't attentive enough. One can't blame you either for being inattentive towards the otherwise humdrum proceedings. The most amusing characters in the film are two plump bodyguards of Vijay Maurya who follow the don anywhere and everywhere he goes.

Shreyas Talpade fails to impress this time around due to bad script. The talented Mahie Gill is criminally wasted. Kay Kay Menon is absolutely miscast in this noisy comedy. Subtle humour suits him more. Shenaz Treasurywala looks good. Period! Vijay Maurya hams. Shruti Seth irritates. Debutante Shiv Pandit doesn't amuse with uncalled for mimicry.

Music Review Three 2009
It's a melodious beginning for 'Tum Jo Ho Kareeb' which has the kind of start that is associated with many a musical by Vikram Bhatt. Though there is no direct reference to a song from any of his past films, one can sense a touch of Kasoor, Ankahee, Inteha and Fareb in the opening notes of this Shakeel Azmi written track. As the song proceeds, you know for sure that Shreya Ghoshal is indeed a well made composition and deserves to be promoted much more aggressively. Blame it on the avalanche of music albums that have hit the stands in the recent past due to which 'Three - Love Lies Betrayal' is trying to find a place for itself. However, 'Tum Jo Ho Kareeb' is a soulful melody that by itself is a good enough reason to go for the album.

The way 'This Beat Is Really Thumping' begins, you expect an Atif Aslam brand of Pakistani pop/rock track. However, that's not really the case as newcomer Jaspreet brings his own attitude in this Hinglish track that is made for the dance floors though without going overboard. Instead, there is some focus on the lyrics as well (by Sagar) with good interspersion of rap making it an entertaining enough track. A youthful track that does take a couple of hearing before one grasps the sound of it, 'This Beat Is Really Thumping' is good while it lasts.

An album that doesn't have a single duet to its credit, Three - Love Lies Betrayal has 'Hamein Pyaar Karo' coming next. A 'raaga' based number with an element of fusion to it, this Nandini Srikar solo is made for the lounge. In the same zone and setting as 'Vaada, Tumse Hai Vaada' [1920], this haunting song written by Sagar is about a woman longing for love. Moving at a lazy pace, 'Hamein Pyaar Karo' is not the kind that one would be found singing on the streets but play it on in your music system in the loneliness of night and you won't mind giving it a hear at all. Deservingly, it finds a very well created Westernized remixed version by Jayant Luthra who at least applies his mind and skills in creating something different rather than just adding a beat or two!

It's back to Vikram Bhatt zone with a slow and engaging start that 'Kabhie Mujhe' takes. Almost an unplugged number that has Sunidhi Chauhan coming behind the mike, 'Kabhi Mujhe' reminds one of the mood that was created by Pritam in Bhatt's Ankahee. A song that has a sad and dark yet engaging feel to it, this Sagar written track has a Western base to it and is a slow rock number that should fit in quite well in the background score of Three - Love Lies Betrayal.

Last year Hamza Faruqui made quite some impression when he sung 'Man Tu Talbat [Superstar] '. Unfortunately the film didn't work at the box office and along with that this well composed and sung number too disappeared without making the kind of waves it should have. Now the singer returns with 'Driving Me Crazy' which is written by him as well. A club track that comes with a new sound and requires a couple of hearing to be grasped, 'Driving Me Crazy' is a foot tapping track which does come with good potential of being popular amongst the youth if promoted better. This one would soon find a place in discotheques though.

OVERALL

Three - Love Lies Betrayal throws in a pleasant surprise as there is not a single number that seems out of place in the album. While 'Tum Jo Ho Kareeb' is the pick of the lot, dance numbers like 'This Beat... ' and 'Driving Me Crazy' are good for the duration they are heard. Then there is a lounge track 'Humein Pyaar Karo' that shows promise of having an extended shelf life while 'Kabhie Mujhe' goes well with the mood of the movie.

Synopsis
Three– Love, Lies and Betrayal is a story about three individuals and what takes place within a house located at Purple Lake. The story revolves around Mrs. Anjini Dutt (Nausheen Ali Sardar), a violin teacher who is running the house with whatever she earns. She is married to Rajeev Dutt (Akshay Kapoor) and her husband who has not been able to earn much, lives on her earnings. This leads to anger and frustration in their relationship.

Rajeev finally gathers the courage to ask her to sell the house and give him the money to invest in the business. This infuriates her, as the house is the only connection she has with her late parents. However, she decides to help her husband and give one portion of her house on rent so that he can use the money for setting up his business.

This brings Sanjay (Ashish Chowdhry) into the picture, who comes to stay as a tenant. He soon reads the tension between the couple and sympathizes with her. In the process she falls in love with him owing to the lack of love in her marriage.

Is Sanjay’s love for real? Has Anjini made a mistake? Will she have to pay for it with her house, or even her life? What is written in her fate? Who will win in this game of love, lies and betrayal one will only have to wait and watch for the drama to unfold!

Movie Review Chintu Ji 2009
Sometimes, big things come in small packages. The expectations from CHINTUJI are zilch. Even the pre-release promotion is extremely low-key. Also, the awareness is as good as nil. But CHINTUJI springs a pleasant surprise. It packs in a solid punch in those 2 hours.

No, this isn't the best film made this side of the Atlantic. Nor does it boast of A-list stars or gloss and scale to catch our attention. But CHINTUJI works because it narrates a simple story of simple people in a simplistic manner.

The township [Hadbahedi] is Utopian, but the characters are very, very real. Writer-director Ranjit Kapoor narrates the story of do-gooders, which only reinforces your faith in goodness and humility. Also, CHINTUJI wouldn't be what it is had it not been for a performer of the calibre of Rishi Kapoor. Take a bow, Chintuji!

Final word? CHINTUJI is a sparkling gem that deserves to be watched. Strongly recommended!

Hadbahedi, a beautiful town, is forward looking but honest. The Hadbahedians believe that they have been totally neglected by the state and seek an identity of their own. Things brighten when they discover that Rishi/Chintu Kapoor was actually born in their town. They send an invite to him and he accepts as he is looking at politics to make a comeback in a big way and Hadbahedi could well be his constituency.

Rishi arrives in Hadbahedi along with Devika [Kulraj Randhawa], the intelligent executive of the PR agency hired for Rishi's political dreams. Rishi is a nuisance at Hadbahedi and treats the innocent people of Hadbahedi with contempt. Tension erupts when Rishi gets a lucrative offer from a neighbouring town...

Inspired by a play THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER, CHINTUJI abounds in humour and the comic sequences, sprinkled generously throughout the film, are truly funny. At times, hilarious. In fact, substantial footage is devoted to Bollywood and even those portions are beautifully integrated in the storyline.

But the film slows in the second hour. Actually, portions linking Priyanshu with an act of terror were just not required. In fact, these portions only add to the length of the film. Besides, the pact between Rishi and Annu Kapoor [playing a power broker] could've been stronger as well. However, the end is simply brilliant. It moves you!

Ranjit Kapoor is a director to watch. His writing, in most parts, is super. Camerawork [Sunny Joseph] is perfect.

Rishi Kapoor is the soul of CHINTUJI. The veteran has essayed a wide variety of roles in his illustrious career, but CHINTUJI is special. This is amongst his most accomplished works. Priyanshu Chatterjee looks perfect for his part. Kulraj Randhawa is highly competent. Amongst the assorted characters, Grusha Kapoor and Saurabh Shukla are excellent. Kamal Chatterjee Shabnam, the septuagenarian who plays the dai, is very good. Sophie Choudry is alright. The remaining actors are also well cast.

On the whole, CHINTUJI is a gem that deserves a watch. Yes, there's no awareness for this film, the pre-release hype is also zero and of course, it has to contend with a bombardment of new films week after week and chances are that this film may get ignored due to these reasons. But here's a request to all cine lovers and also multiplexes, from this writer. Give this film a chance. Let's nurture it well, so that genuine efforts like CHINTUJI don't go unnoticed.

Music Review Vaada Raha I Promise (2009)
With so many soundtracks releasing at the moment, one would be forgiven for thinking that Bollywood is on some kind of gold rush! Ahem, maybe it’s got something to do with the backlog of movies finally racing off the production lines that were earlier postponed due to the strikes? But is the recent glut of music releases worth a listen and how do you distinguish between the good, bad and ugly? Well dear listeners…you can certainly tune into Planetbollywood.com to get the full lowdown!

Sameer Karnik’s Vaada Raha….I Promise is one music release which provides more curiosity than other soundtracks simply because of the sheer variety of composers involved. There are FIVE in total, which begs the question as to why so many were required? Further reference to the back of the CD cover reveals some sparkling talents including Toshi Sharib (Raaz TMC (2008) and Jashnn (2009) fame), Punjabi folk singer Babbu Mann and Monty Sharma (Saawariya (2007), Chamku (2008) fame). The two not so well known composers are the duo Rahul B. Seth & Sandy and Sanjay Chowdhury who provides some instrumentals and the background score….PHEW! So was such an investment worth it? Does the music live up to expectations? Well YES…but only in parts. So overall, is it worth a listen? YES!

Toshi Sharib did well in their debut soundtrack for Vikram Bhatt’s Jashnn (2009) earlier this year. However you felt they had much more to offer so it will be interesting to see what they achieve in their sole offering here for the title song “Vaada Raha…” . Unfortunately it’s a bit of a let down. Clearly instructed to provide a melodious number, they churn out a very typical dhol-beat song that does not impress at all. Honestly the arrangements are so flat and cheesy you want to forget it instantly… lyrics by Turaz are a complete wash out as well. Singing from Toshi is normally lively but here he sounds dull. Overall, to say it’s a disappointment would be an understatement! Back to the drawing board for this duo.

“Vaada Raha Remix” is much more the Toshi Sharib we know and love! Gone is the annoying dhol fusion and in its place we get more bearable techno beats. Definitely more enjoyable than the original.
Babbu Mann is one of those rare multi-faceted talents that can compose, write and sing a song from beginning to end. Unfortunately we haven’t seen much of him in Bollywood recently. Thank god then that the producers of this movie are his fans because the next track “Rab Na Kare” justify their selection with one of the best songs of the soundtrack! There’s nothing complicated or particularly innovative here, but Mann puts his heart and soul into this and that’s enough to make it enjoyable. A haunting melody dominates but is topped with a traditional touch particularly the layering beats/tabla fusion which are infectious but understated. Mann’s low octave vocals are pure magic as expected. His lyrics are also good. The soundtrack begins to fulfill some of it’s potential!

“Rab Na Kare Accoustic Version” is a shorter rendevous with Babbu Mann who is much higher on the emotional quotient. Gone are the catchy beats but his voice resonates throughout making for a good listen.

But the true PINNACLE of this album arrives alongside the name of a different composer: Monty Sharma. He’s not produced much in the way of quality music since his impressive Chamku (2008). That was until now! Because Monty has realized his potential fully here in the BEST song of the album, a heart-felt cry from the heavens called “Kubul” . The way the singer (Parthiv Gohil) utters the opening line “Kubul…Kar Le Maula” will simply cast a spell on you until the song finishes such is it’s outrageous charm and affection! And you are pretty helpless, what with the slow pace, the soft and blissful orchestral arrangements and the delightful piano piece to name but a few of it’s attractions. Add some amazingly fresh and bewitching vocals by little known artists Parthiv Gohil and Sharmista Chateerjee and you have a winner all the way. Shail Hade provides great support and needs no introductions as one of Monty’s protégés. The poetry by Sandeep Nath is enriching, in fact the word “Kubul” itself has an alluring charm to it and one has to say it’s been a long time since this word has been used so effectively in a song. Enough said. Just add this to your “favorite songs of 2009” playlist and be proud to repeat it over and over again….and remember the composer: Monty Sharma.

Having reached the pinnacle of Vaada Raha, we could end the review here as nothing else gets close to it. But we must continue to the end…
An uplifting song follows in the form of “Aaj Aasman” . Nothing spectacular here, just a pleasant relaxing tune which is certainly worth a listen for Shaan’s vocals alone. Shweta Pandit joins him and provides reasonable support. Lyrics and music composition is by Rahul B. Seth & Sandy. Enjoyable listen.

The same duo end the soundtrack with another upbeat track “Achal Hain Mere Hausle” . The excellent (acoustic) guitar strumming is the highlight of this one. However it needs to be enjoyed on screen since it supports the “hope” theme of the movie. Rahul B. Seth pens some effective lyrics. Kunal Ganjawala (and chorus) performs sincerely as usual but the song is too situational for repeated listening.

We then have three good instrumental ‘themes’ by Sanjay Chowdury including “Vaada Raha” , “Flying High” and “Lost in Love” . Each one is well composed and should fit in well with the movie.

Overall, Vaada Raha lives up to some of it’s potential as big names such as Babbu Mann deliver. Only Toshi Sharib are disappointing. However it’s Monty Sharma who steals the show yet again with the superb “Kubul” which is the worth the album price alone. Don’t miss that song for anything!

Music Review: Baabarr 2009
Anand Raaj Anand brings himself behind the mike for the opening track 'Maula Yeh Bataa' which is an out and out sad number. Telling the story of the protagonist who has lost everything in life and doesn't see any hope, redemption or a better life ahead in days to come, thematically it is similar to 'Zindagi Ki Talaash Mein Hum Maut Ke Kitne Paas Aa Gaye' [Saathi]. This time around it's a prayer to God where Anand Raj Anand along with singer Rahul Sharma wonders if there would be some light at the end of the tunnel. An okay sounding track for the background which also appears in an 'unplugged' version.

To one's utter surprise, there is also a title song for the film. Sukhwinder Singh sings 'Baabarr' which is set in Anand Raaj Anand template of music composition. Describing the might of 'Baabarr', this too is the one for the background and expected to play on at any heroic (or villainy) act by Baabarr. Of course, one can't be expected to either sing along or play the song amidst a bunch of friends. Strictly situational and not the kind that contribute to the music sales.

Keeping music sales in mind though, there is 'Baje Raat Ke Barah' which is set in a 'Beedi Jaliale' mode from all ends. Whether it is lyrics, composition, rendition, setting, costumes or choreography, everything about it aims at being 'Beedi Jalaile'. As a standalone number, it is not a bad hear even though the lyrics do touch about being risqué. Sunidhi Chauhan, who is expected to oblige whenever a song set in this situation is to be composed, is the lady behind the mike and she doesn't do a bad job either.

There is a surprise though with the arrival of 'Pagal Manva' which has a semi-classical setting to it. A 'raaga' based solo by Raka Mukherji, this one brings in a quality aspect to the album. Of course 'Paagal Manva' is again not the kind of number that would make listeners rush to the nearest music store. However, the fact remains that from purity point of view, this one is the best that Anand Raaj Anand had to offer in Baabarr so far. The album concludes with 'Baabarr - Theme', which just like 'Maula Yeh Bataa' and 'Baabarr', adds on the background score.

OVERALL

Except for 'Baje Raat Ke Barah', there isn't anything in Baabarr that has a mass appeal to it. Even this track is restricted to smaller centers that may warm up to the song provided there is an impetus in it's promotion in days to come.

Music Review Three Love Lies Betrayal 2009
It's a melodious beginning for 'Tum Jo Ho Kareeb' which has the kind of start that is associated with many a musical by Vikram Bhatt. Though there is no direct reference to a song from any of his past films, one can sense a touch of Kasoor, Ankahee, Inteha and Fareb in the opening notes of this Shakeel Azmi written track. As the song proceeds, you know for sure that Shreya Ghoshal is indeed a well made composition and deserves to be promoted much more aggressively. Blame it on the avalanche of music albums that have hit the stands in the recent past due to which 'Three - Love Lies Betrayal' is trying to find a place for itself. However, 'Tum Jo Ho Kareeb' is a soulful melody that by itself is a good enough reason to go for the album.

The way 'This Beat Is Really Thumping' begins, you expect an Atif Aslam brand of Pakistani pop/rock track. However, that's not really the case as newcomer Jaspreet brings his own attitude in this Hinglish track that is made for the dance floors though without going overboard. Instead, there is some focus on the lyrics as well (by Sagar) with good interspersion of rap making it an entertaining enough track. A youthful track that does take a couple of hearing before one grasps the sound of it, 'This Beat Is Really Thumping' is good while it lasts.

An album that doesn't have a single duet to its credit, Three - Love Lies Betrayal has 'Hamein Pyaar Karo' coming next. A 'raaga' based number with an element of fusion to it, this Nandini Srikar solo is made for the lounge. In the same zone and setting as 'Vaada, Tumse Hai Vaada' [1920], this haunting song written by Sagar is about a woman longing for love. Moving at a lazy pace, 'Hamein Pyaar Karo' is not the kind that one would be found singing on the streets but play it on in your music system in the loneliness of night and you won't mind giving it a hear at all. Deservingly, it finds a very well created Westernized remixed version by Jayant Luthra who at least applies his mind and skills in creating something different rather than just adding a beat or two!

It's back to Vikram Bhatt zone with a slow and engaging start that 'Kabhie Mujhe' takes. Almost an unplugged number that has Sunidhi Chauhan coming behind the mike, 'Kabhi Mujhe' reminds one of the mood that was created by Pritam in Bhatt's Ankahee. A song that has a sad and dark yet engaging feel to it, this Sagar written track has a Western base to it and is a slow rock number that should fit in quite well in the background score of Three - Love Lies Betrayal.

Last year Hamza Faruqui made quite some impression when he sung 'Man Tu Talbat [Superstar] '. Unfortunately the film didn't work at the box office and along with that this well composed and sung number too disappeared without making the kind of waves it should have. Now the singer returns with 'Driving Me Crazy' which is written by him as well. A club track that comes with a new sound and requires a couple of hearing to be grasped, 'Driving Me Crazy' is a foot tapping track which does come with good potential of being popular amongst the youth if promoted better. This one would soon find a place in discotheques though.

OVERALL

Three - Love Lies Betrayal throws in a pleasant surprise as there is not a single number that seems out of place in the album. While 'Tum Jo Ho Kareeb' is the pick of the lot, dance numbers like 'This Beat... ' and 'Driving Me Crazy' are good for the duration they are heard. Then there is a lounge track 'Humein Pyaar Karo' that shows promise of having an extended shelf life while 'Kabhie Mujhe' goes well with the mood of the movie.

Music Review Whats Your Rashee
Film: What's Your Raashee?; music director: Sohail Sen; lyricist: Javed Akhtar; singers: Aslesha Gowariker, Shaan, Bhavya Pandit, Sohail Sen, Marianne D Cruz, Tarannum Malik, Rajab Ali Bharti, Bela Shende, Ashutosh Gowariker, Pamela Jain, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan and Madhushree.

Ashutosh Gowariker's films are synonymous with AR Rahman's tunes, but for his What's Your Rashee?, which has Priyanka Chopra and Hurman Baweja in lead roles, the director has got on board a new composer, Sohail Sen - who has done a commendable job.

From fast pacy numbers to romantic songs to Arabic and folk tunes - Sen, son of music composer Sameer Sen, has packed interesting compostions in the album.

The film has 13 songs, one each for the 12 zodiac signs and one is a mix of all. The young composer has roped in the director as well has his sister Aslesha to sing.

The album kickstarts with a pleasing and soft number Jao na crooned by Sen himself along with Tarannum Malik. It is quite intriguing and the part where the song suddenly gains momentum works well for it. It will surely appeal to the younger generation.

Up next is Aaja lehrate that has vocals by Shaan and Bhavya Pandit. It is quite fast-paced and has western influences with English lyrics thrown in here and there. But the peppy number doesn't stand out in the album.

Bikhri bikhri, sung by Sohail Sen and Marianne D. Cruz, will have a tranquilizing effect on you. A soft, soothing and melodious number, it immediately strikes a chord with the listener.

Then we have Mannunga mannunga. Director Ashutosh Gowariker himself goes behind the mike along with Pamela Jain to sing the song. But the track is unappealing and unexciting.

Sau janam, a love ballet by Udit Narayan, Madhushree and Sen, is one of the best songs in the album. A mushy number, it has a strong musical backing and stays with you long after. A great composition.

Next in line is Aa le chal. Sung by Aslesha Gowariker, it is nothing extraordinary. An average number.

Pyaari pyaari is another feel-good song with some amount of sweetness in it. It is crooned by Alka Yagnik and Sen.

Then there is Su cheSalone kya, is a song with an Arabic feel. It is sung by Sen and Tarannum Malik. Even though the music is captivating, the lyrics are a big put off and take away the zing from the song.

Dhadkan dhadkan has edgy music with a strong musical backing. Once again Sen and Tarannum team up for the song that has a haunting feel to it. The number does impress.

Pal pal jisko dhoonde has influences of jazz music. A soft and free flowing number, it is sung by Sen.

Koi Jaane na is an interesting number sprinkled with folk flavour. A poignant song, it is sung very well by Rajab Ali Bharti and Bela.

Finally, there is Chehra jo dekhe hain by Sen again that is the title track of the film. The song includes samples from the other 12 songs.

On the whole What's your Raashee? is a decent album, even though long. The budding composer has done a good job.

Jabse hum is the musical equivalent a decade-old chick-flick, with its lyrics posing perfectly Google-able existential questions, while VIVA’s reunion in We are the teen queens is equally back dated and ho-hum. That’s Shamir Tandon’s sorry contribution, leaving the severely neglected Tabun to make minor amends. Tabun’s choice of Kailash Kher for the delightfully earthy Chote chote; the childishly rhythmic exuberance of the friendship ditty, Sambhali hai and the 80s styled pop in Vasundhara Das’ Koi kuch bhi make for decent listens. But, Jojo sings to himself like a self-conscious Indipop novice in the functional Tere bin. Tabun sweetens Aamras!

Music Review Aagey Se Right 2009
Shilpa Rao has sung only a handful of tracks in her short career so far but has made an impression in each of her outings. Whether it is 'Khuda Jaane' [Bachna Ae Haseeno], 'Dhol Yaara Dhol' [Dev D], 'Saiyaan Re' [Salaam-e-Ishq] or 'Javeda Zindagi - Tose Naina Lagey' [Anwar], she has always been excellent. Same is the case in 'Mahiya' as well which is a fusion between contemporary Indian Bollywood music and Western rock; something that gives an extra zing to this romantic outing. Place this Hitesh Kewalya written track in any of the Bollywood biggies and it would have been a chartbuster already. The number deserves to be promoted aggressively.

Ram Sampath is the guest composer in the album for his track 'Daav Laga'. He is joined by lyricist Munna Dhiman and singer Sona Mohapatra and together they get together for a fun outing. Seemingly an item number, it doesn't quite break new grounds but has a good enough spunk and rhythm to it which makes it an easy hear. A core situational track, 'Daav Laga' plays to the gallery and that's where the buck stops.

Title song 'Aagey Se Right' comes in the shape of 'Hippie Tu Jhoom'. It's a chorus beginning to this theme track written by Hitesh Kewalya that sees Kirti Sagathia and Sunidhi Chauhan joining soon after along with Amartya Rahut. A barely passable situational track that doesn't quite entice you as a listener but may turn good visually due to its naughty appeal. Frankly, one expected much better from the title track of this film that does seem interesting and funny. There is a 'remix' version that comes later that eventually helps in adding to the recollection factor.

'Love Flashback' sees Bappi Lahiri coming behind the mike as a singer with support from Suzanne D'Mello and Amartya Rahut. The sound belongs to the disco setting of the 80s (which further justifies the presence of Bappi Lahiri in the song) while Hitesh Kewalya's lyrics yet again play to the gallery. An ordinary sounding number that is yet again purely situational, it would all boil down to the way it is presented on screen. Audio-wise though, it isn't good enough to make audiences throng the music stores.

It's a serene 60s style beginning for 'More Piya' which has a lounge setting to it. Deepikkaa Bhattacharya is roped in to croon this soft number that throws a sudden twist with Kay Kay Menon arriving on the scene. He begins his 'sher-o-shayari' and just when one thought that it was going to be a 'kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayal aata hai' moment, Kay Kay comes up with his tapori shayari that is bound to have audiences in split.

However, to justify the overall good quality of the song which is written by Shadab Akhtar and Manish Hariprasad, there are two versions that are placed in the album. One is with the 'tapori' interspersions [More Piya - Tapori] while the other is a plain and simple Deepikkaa solo without Kay Kay joining her [More Piya - Bar].

OVERALL

Aagey Se Right is an okay album which does have a couple of songs that do manage to make an impression. However, beyond 'Mahiya' and 'More Piya', there isn't much in store in this album which otherwise stays on to be strictly situational.

Movie Review Kissan 2009
Director Puneet Sira's 'Kissan' is more or less a remake of Manoj Kumar’s 1967 hit film 'Upkaar', set in a village the film is about two brothers Sohail and Arbaaz Khan, who look like movie stars inspite of one of them being a farmer.

In their youth while Arbaaz is sent to the city to study law, Sohail stays back home to till their land. The cliches arrive when two decades later the family faces a grave problem as their land is forced to be sold off to rich businessmen. Now making a movie about the plight of farmers is one thing, but turning it into a nonsensical violent B-movie is another.

The address has already been issued in Manoj Kumar's flick as well as in the brilliant 'Mother India', and Kissan completely misses the point. Apart from the dated plot, the film comprises of some pretty yawn inducing music. What more ridiculous is that the film depicts a village from Punjab as something straight out of a Steven Segal movie, complete with nasty guys killing people by the dozen, the farmers screaming for revenge after taking their pagdis off. Why make an over-the-top flick that portrays farmers as unintelligible human beings?

Barring newcomer Romeo who plays the villain, the performances in Kissan are shockingly bad, as none of the characters speak with proper Punjabi accents. The setting itself is strange, where everyone sings bhangra songs all the time in mustard fields. The supporting cast including Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi, Sarat Saxena and Dilip Tahil sleepwalk through their roles. Jackie Shroff is unintentionally funny once again as he tries very hard to 'act emotional'.

Movie Review Yeh Mera India
Despite having delivered flops for a long time now, filmmaker N.Chandra is best remembered for his three films – the hard hitting Ankush and Pratighaat and of course the Ek Do Teen number film Tezaab which made Madhuri an overnight star. With his latest offering Y.M.I – Yeh Mera India, Chandra is back to his Ankush-Pratighaat form which made you stand up and notice the raw energy of his subjects.

Y.M.I like Oscar winner film, Crash peeks into the lives of a 12 people from diverse backgrounds and weaves together multiple stories which include racial discrimination, communal bias, immigrant issues, class and caste issues etc with all the events unfolding in a single day in the city of Mumbai where his characters are based.

What makes Y.M.I a winner are its terrific dialogues and Chandra’s handling of disturbing sequences with every single actor from the ensemble cast delivering an excellent performance. The manner in which Chandra has succeeded in connecting all the stories together is also laudable. Each single story connects with you and it is stuff that you can instantly relate to happening around you. The only issue however remains are their culminations. Chandra has tried to keep the ending happy rather than having a dark end which films tackling such subjects end up with. The length also could have been around two hours than going to almost two and a half hours.

Anupam Kher, Seema Biswas, Rajpal Yadav, Atul Kulkarni and Vijay Raaz are the most impressive of the lot. Rest all actors lend good support.

Do check out this film, if you are in mood for a high voltage drama experience. You wont regret your decision.
